John the Baptist

JOHN THE BAPTIST
By Pat Stacy

JOHN THE BAPTIST
16" x 8"
Acrylic on Clayboard
This painting is not for sale. It was done in a class instructed
by Peter Pearson, Iconologist. It is an icon in the Russian
style, with many thin layers of acrylic. It was a great
experience, my first attempt at an icon. I have done 2 since
then, but I still like this one the best. A very different style
of painting, and one I recommend you try if you are at
all interested. http://www.patstacy.com/

2011 free calendar download by BECKY JOY

"DAWN" JANUARY 2011 CALENDAR

Haven't gotten your calendar yet? You can download the month of January right here. Each month of the year I will choose one of my paintings. I will post it on the home page of my website the last week and first week of each month. Any other time you will have to go onto my website under "fun stuff" where you will be able to download the calendar. The calendar is set up to print on an 11x14 portrait style paper.

I was thinking about which painting to use for the first month, my first endeavor in this. I chose this 8x10 plein air which is titled "Dawn". I felt that was an appropriate title for the beginning of a fantastic new year for all of. So download as many copies as you want or send the link to a friend. This is just one more way that I can share my art with you. It's yours for free to keep.

Here is the link: http://www.beckyjoy.com/
Have a great New Year! I'll talk to you all later.

Blue Stardust - Abstract Painting by Jake Beckman

Blue Stardust
Blue Stardust is a serene 11 x 14 x 3/4 inch acrylic painting in the Abstract Concepts series by Jake Beckman. Blue Stardust consists of softly spattered shades of blue and touches of red oxide spiraling inward periodically punctuated with points of white-like someone gathering up the fabric of the night sky.

The Abstract Concepts series encompasses Jake's free form exploration and expression of color, emotion, ideas, textures and structured formlessness, in search of the intrinsic quality of things rather than absolute concrete representation. "I just decided to revisit this particular concept again. I may do so a couple of more times...- Jake"

Grackles have such great and goofy personalities. In our backyard they pick up dog food from a neighbor and wash the big bites in our bird water. They love Barrel Cactus seeds, and I think when the sun shines on their feathers they are super colorful and not black at all.
Grackle is currently showing at Gallery Encore in Fair Oaks, California.

Bev Koldon: Pet Portrait 11 x 14 Oil Pastel

This painting is a portrait of our dog, Ranger.  I painted it from a picture I took of him when he was about 6 months old. There's something about those puppy eyes and the tilt of the head that will get you every time.  Ranger is four years old now, with the same friendly mushy face, just a lot bigger.

Sunset, water, snow painting by BECKY JOY

Sky #39 5x7 oil on canvas panel,

The sky is the limit or is it unlimited. An odd saying for what it means. Today I did this little snow scene. I wanted to keep most of the painting in high key, so the tree is it, the dark with the brightest spot, the sun, next to it.  There are a lot of grays in the painting with the colors as a whole becoming cooler as they move away from the sun. I put the group of trees in the background to help balance the painting.

I took plenty of photos of this painting as I was painting it. The process of painting this one will be in my e-book that will be coming up, so check back for it. I hope to have it done by the time I send out my newsletter, which I'm waiting for the first of the year to do. I've had a couple of people let me know that they miss it and where is it. Its coming, I promise. So much to do.

Well, on to working on that e-book.

Talk to you all later.

Stevie Denny: "Prickly Poppies", 5x7 watercolor

This painting is from a photo I took several years ago, when we were taking a little road trip from Mesa to Prescott via Yarnell / Congress / Peeples Valley  / Skull Valley.  It's a nice drive along Highway 89 from Wickenburg. Along the way, we drove off on a dirt road and I came across these bushes of white prickly poppies.  Today I was looking up the botanical name of these plants:  Argemone Pleicantha; but what I didn't know until now is that every part of the plant is poisonous, and even animals won't touch them.  These plants give fair warning, though, with their prickly stems and buds!

Desert oil landscape by BECKY JOY

Sky # 38  6x6 oil landscape on canvas panel

I know the sky doesn't have a lot going on in it. It is really about the ground on this one, but I'm going to post it as sky #38.
I started the painting as an abstract shape for the shadows linking them together. All paintings have as their essence abstract shapes to hold the painting together. I then started adding the light on the ground and details with few details in the shadows. The sky was next laying down a golden pink at the horizon and more on the right, then cad red with titanium and lastly, at the top I layed in alizarine crimson and titanium. After that was all down I then went over the sky with ultramarine and titanium keeping it lighter at the horizon. This grayed the sky, but kept it warm with the reds under it.
I'm starting to get together some images for an ebook that I will be putting together along with the progression and explanations for my reasoning and choices. Hopefully, it will be ready within two weeks. The hardest part is for me to remember to stop painting and to take a photo.
Well, onto more painting today.
Talk to you all later.

North Wind Building - Laurelea Kim 17 x 20 Oil on canvas board $250.00

This little piece was a study en plein aire while I was watching the impossible shadows on our Havasupai range . The mountain was purple, navy and red, very dark, but the ground had spots of incredible gold where the sun was making its way through the clouds  and darkness as it was setting.

Sonoita Storm, 7x10 watercolor

I painted this from a photo I took several years ago, when we were traveling through Southern Arizona.  There were several thunderstorms in the area, creating interesting cloud shapes.  Sonoita is a beautiful town about 50 miles southeast of Tucson.  It's in the high grasslands, and the scenery is spectacular.  It has become popular in recent years because Sonoita and the neighboring town of Elgin have several local wineries.

I'm back to work today. The computer this morning and painting this afternoon. Its getting to be a routine.  I hope that all of you had a great holiday. Now its diet time. OMG way too much food, but it was so good! My daughter cooked and she really is a good cook.

I'm doing some goal setting for my business for next year. I spent quite a bit of time yesterday and today planning a writing things down. I think I've got it. I may post my goals and that will make me more accountable and follow through. At least, that's what I'm thinking.

So, about dinner time and time to quit for today. Talk to you all later.

So often we see the Prickly Pear in yards. A few weeks ago while wandering out in the Superstitions I came across this Prickly Pear cactus amongst the rocks of the desert. It just jumped out at me. It seemed like the Prickly Pear has made it's own composition just for me to paint. I love taking a simple scene and creating art from it.

White Hope 36 x 36 oil on gallery wrapped canvas .Laurelea Kim

$800.00

The White Buffalo Hope is a great symbol Unity and Peace
The legend of the White Buffalo in Native American Cultures tells of Pte Sha Wi a  sacred woman of supernatural origin who appeared to the Lakota  almost 2000 years ago. She taught the people to worship, pray and have hope for peace among all men leaving a white buffalo calf as the symbol to remind the tribes to continue to hope. When Roman Catholic missionaries first came among the Lakota their stories of the Virgin Mary and Jesus became associated with the "White Buffalo Calf Woman" . The practice of identifiying Mary with Pte Sha Wi continues among some Lakota Christians to this day.

The Magical Realism series is explores Jake's continuing fascination with mythology, magical thinking and fantasy. Ocotillo Dawn oil on gallery wrapped canvas 24. x 30 by Laurelea Kim

A study in fortitude, patience and joy.
The Ocotillo is a beautiful sight after the rain comes to the desert. It shouts in joy and bursts from grey to a multicolored display that arrives quickly and dissipates just as fast.

This was from photos taken while walking the sonoran desert early one morning. The colors echoing the "magic time" of sunrises and sunsets in the desert...spectacular, vibrant and changing.

Out of Darkness on a light horse 36 x 48 mixed media on gallery wrapped canvas $1,250.00

By Laurelea Kim
When I first moved from California to Arizona the Native American influence had a great impact on me, as did most of the "severe beauty" of the desert. Our Light horse is taking the road from one life into another with native symbols leading the way. The Feathers on his mane tell of communicating with a higher power, the arrow of course is a universal symbol of direction, but is also a hopi symbol, along with the steps to betterment.  A really fun piece to do that resonated with my personal changes...all good.

Backyard Bougainvillea, 12x12 Oil on canvas panel

One of the most colorful shrubs in the southwest is the bougainvillea.  They are seen in shades of light pink to deep purple, and I've even seen orange ones.  I see this bougainvillea when I ride my bike around the neighborhood; and I took a photo when it was in full bloom last spring.  When I finished this painting today, it slipped off my easel and I grabbed it -- somewhere on the right side of the bougainvillea is my thumb print.  I couldn't find it, but maybe you can -- let me know if you do.

This painting can be purchased for $75.00 unframed, with shipping included.

Bird Painting "Robin" by Barbara Rudolph

"Robin"
"The Early Bird"

This new little "oil sketch" is of a "robin."  I painted it in oil on a 10x8" canvas panel.  They are a great little gift size.  "The "Robin" has a beautiful orange breast with long legs and a cheery song.
$90.

Contact:  email
Barbara Rudolph - Arizona

Robin

Robin sits in the apple tree
Singing sweetly down to me
She tells me of her cozy nest
In the tree she likes best.

She tells me that her robin mate
And she herself can hardly wait --
They have four blue eggs, you see,
that soon will be their family.

They'll live in their cozy nest
In the tree that they loved best
Happy in her apple tree,
Robin sings her news to me.

Sorry...I could not find the author of this little poem.

"Dorothy" by Li Mahalik

Oil on gessoed Masonite, 12"x12"

My Sweet Dorothy

At six in the morn,
Her garage door swung squeakily open.
Out came Dorothy in her pink robe
Dashing, but not hurriedly.

She picked up the newspaper
from the driveway,
Which would later sprawl all over
Her 1960's living room,
Advertisements on top.

The sky was just turning pink.
She looked up with her graying eyes.
Oh, gee! It's chilly today,
She said.

*****
I spent too much time painting Dorothy. After extra 5 or six hours of work after she posted for my friends and me, I didn't know if it got any better. But I would say it probably did because I found not much I wanted to do over. But I think I learned a lot about temperature and hope it sticks.

Dorothy is my 89 year old neighbor. She is kind, wise, healthy and tough. We became good friends over the last dozen years. She is like a mother to me, whom I lost when I was 10.
