The Big Apple

Not New York City....just a really big apple!
The painting is 24" x 24" and done in Oil on Canvas with a palette knife.  It is the first work in a series entitled, "Incredible Edibles"
This piece and most of my other work is available in prints on paper or canvas at: Fine Art America
"First Dance"
Watercolor, 11" X 14"

I painted this from a photo of my niece's wedding. The photo was rather ordinary, but with a bit of colorful paint, lots of water, a wedding photo can become a piece of art that portrays the emotions of the day. I enjoy working with clients who want similar pieces.

"A Promise" by Li Mahaik

Oil on Gessoed Masonite, 6" x 6"

Before I posted this, I had to think about how this painting came about, even though I only started it two days ago, changed it, let it sit there and finished it today. Then I remembered it was a landscape with a big Agave in front and a graceful Mesquite tree in the back and a strip of light in between the two. I still have the picture in my file, but come to think of it, it's really not bad, but I started over and here it is.

(Yes, Becky, we finally got some rain, but here in Scottsdale, the whimsical rain was only enough to wash the dust off the roof and messed up the facia board around the house...I hope we'll get some more rain.)

Please visit my blog and website to see more paintings. If you're interested in purchasing, please email me. The small 6x6's are around $125 including shipping in the US. Thank you so much for looking!

sunset western sky by BECKY JOY

This 6x6 oil on board is for sale on my website. Included with the purchase is a black wrought iron display easel so that framing is not needed. www.beckyjoy.com. The photo of this painting isn't real good for color and values. I'll retake it tomorrow.

Yesterday was once of the most incredible sunsets I think I have ever seen. It wasn't the setting sun itself, but the clouds in the east that the sun was shining on. As I said yesterday, Arizona has the most incredible sunsets during the summer. The clouds were big monsoon clouds. There was variety in the texture, big billowy and almost transparent thin clouds. I wasn't prepared for what I saw, no camera, no cell phone, no paints, just in the car to the mall. I had to stand out in the parking lot and watch the sunset instead of going inside. It was absolutely beautiful. Right now it is raining like crazy here. Its been a while since we have had some real serious rain. Its kind of fun and exciting when it does happen. Also the air smells so sweet with the smell of the desert plants. Love it!

Two days left to sign up for my newsletter to be in the drawing for the free painting in July.

Remember that all my little paintings come with an easel so that you do not need to frame them.

Talk to you all tomorrow.

Sunset skyscape oil daily painting by BECKY JOY

WARM LIGHT  6x6 oil on canvas.

This is all that I got done today as far as painting (a lot of errands to do today). I did some wiping off of the canvas and starting over. Some days just don't go real easily. I've been going through photos and sketches pondering what to do next for a larger painting. I haven't decided yet. Hopefully, tomorrow will bring some new ideas.

I am now offering these wrought iron display easels free with each small oil study (5x7 or 6x6) purchases. The edges will be finished so that it will not be necessary to frame the paintings. It also gives you another place to display your paintings besides just the walls.

Monsoon season is here in Phoenix. It is really clouding up in the afternoons and more humidity. If you have never seen the summer clouds in the desert, they are magnificent. They are the best thing about summer here.

Just a couple of more days to sign up for my newsletter to be in the monthly drawing for a free oil study.
I'll be posting something else tomorrow. I will absolutely be painting, after I take care of my address on my drivers license. Talk to you all later.

"A Day In November" by Li Mahalik

Oil on Gessoed Masonite, 6"x6"

This piece evolved from a presentational to a non-presentational. I found that it is easier to "switch" from one to the other, rather than to start an abstract from nowhere, which I do sometimes, because quite often I end up losing the freshness and the momentum. The images in the mind are hard to hold, and the paint, once on the canvas, solidifies the image; one has no choice but to keep going, innovate and know how and when to quit.

Please come visit my website, my blog , my store or email me if you would like.

Thank you so much for viewing.

ON TOP OF THE WORLD 5X7 plein air oil

For the last 5 days I've been camping in Zion and at Brian Head, UT. I was wonderful getting away to some cool weather and away from the moving and putting things away.

This painting is one of the plein air paintings that I did in Brian Head. I didn't get very much accomplished as far as painting. I didn't bring the main colors with me that I always use. I had a lot of odd colors to work with. I had cleaned out my bag and thought that I put the right colors in, but what I got instead was a lot of frustration. Anyway, I hiked a lot more than painted and I probably needed that more.

Tomorrow I should get back to work along with some errands that I will be doing. So, I will talk to you all later.

Remember to sign up for my newsletter. There are a few days left this month to be in the drawing for a free painting that I will give away at the end of July.

"Red Friday" by Li Mahalik

Oil on Gessoed Masonite, 6x6

Cropped views from within a painting always fascinate me. They make you feel like you don't know your creation. This painting evolved from within kind of like when one zooms into the inner space. It's done mostly with a palette knife.

"Route 66" by Li Mahalik

Oil on Gessoed Masonite, 6 x 6

This is the third 6"x6" abstract painting I did on one of the masonite panels I ordered a week ago and gessoed myself. Painting a small piece like this is quite different from doing a larger one. A size 10 brush can do what a 4" brush would on a bigger canvas. Modifying or even doing over is so much easier, so I'm loving it. Best of all, it gives a thumbnail view of what a bigger painting might look like, although the process and technique would be quite different from one to the other.

Field and Barn oil painting by BECKY JOY

This petite oil painting, 6x6, is for sale on my website  www.beckyjoy.com

I loved the distance in this scene with the flat field going into the distance. The shadow of the tree also added a lot of interest helping to frame the painting. I changed the color of the building several times before settling on this color. If I had made the building brighter in color, your eye would have gone to that. I wanted you to go back into the distance and move around.

I got a lot of painting done yesterday and today finishing a couple of 11x14's which I will reveal later.

Why I do what I do

When I was asked to paint two pieces for a "Dia de los Muertos" (Day of the Dead) exhibit, I declined at first. It had never occurred to me to paint skeletons.....and I didn’t know a lot about of the event.

"Dia de los Muertos" is a very festive celebration in Mexico where families honor their departed members. I finally decided to paint them. Both sold during the exhibit and I earned commissions to do several more.

In the past two years, I have done almost 30 of these paintings : "skeletons celebrating life". I don't portray them in the traditional style....mine seem to take on a life of their own.

When I see people having a good time I usually visualize my whimsical friends searching for a canvas where they can join in the fun....and I enjoy making it happen.

Red Barn daily oil painting by BECKY JOY

6x6 oil on canvas, The Big Red Barn, is available on my website SOLD
This barn is different for me because it is in good shape and still standing. I usually go for the derelict buildings. I liked this one because it was sitting up on a hill and looked even bigger than it was. All the different colors of red were interesting and of course, the green moss than contrasted with the red. This was in Oregon which explains the moss on the roof. All that moss, it won't be long before this barn will be a derelict building.
