Deschutes Study, 5x7 watercolor by Stevie Denny

A few years ago, I attended Art in the Mountains in Bend, Oregon.  We did plein air painting along the Deschutes River, and I took quite a few photos.  I painted this study from one of those photos.  Volcanic rocks are abundant, creating the white water in this fast-moving river -- a painter's paradise.

Impressionist oil sunset landscape painting by BECKY JOY

The Colors of Sunset 11x14 oil $600. Click here to purchase.

Hi all,

I had a lot of fun painting this one, playing in the paint. I did a lot of adjusting the color temperature and the values until I got it just right. I seem to do that with sunsets. I've been in the mood for roads lately too. I like that little bit of light on the road in the distance. That adds a lot to the painting. I usually like to have a  secondary focal point, adding more interest. In the foreground a lot of the paint that I add for texture is my left over grays. I think the variety in texture with smooth and thick create more interest and depth in the painting.

I've had a few emails lately asking about my paintings, wondering what I work on and the brands of paint that I use. I paint mostly on canvas panels that I make myself. I do paint on linen also. Most of my oil paints are classic oil and gamblin. Both have a buttery feel. Gamblin is more expensive, but you get what you pay for. The pigment is much more concentrated and really nice color to work with. I'm still working on more paintings for a gallery. So, back to the easel.

Talk to you all later,

Becky

cloudscape, blue skies oil landscape painting by BECKY JOY

"Almost Heaven" 6x6 oil on canvas panel. $150. click here to purchase.
Hi everyone,
Today I want to talk about rich, thick, gooey paint, which is so fun to paint with. I love the textural quality of oil paints. For years I painted in watercolor, but I eventually went back to oils. I have always loved working with clay and sculpture. At once time I had a kiln and used to make hand built pottery and sculpture. I have always felt that oil paints gives me that tactile, sculptural quality and the color that I really missed in clay. Oil paint gives me the time to play in the paint.  I bet that is something that you didn't know about me!
There are a lot of varying grays in this painting which makes the pure blues and yellows stand out, giving it more of a glow. Painting is all about variety to me, variety in texture, brush strokes, sizes, etc. You get the idea. In fact, I wrote an article, Opposites Attract, about that subject using it in composition.
I intend to focus my blog on teaching and painting advise. If any of you have questions or would like me to write about anything that you are interested in, email me, let me know.

Morning Light In Zion

"Morning Light In Zion"
Oil,  12" X 16"  $575

Several months ago I visited Zion National Park and was struck by this scene - actually mezmerised by the beauty.  The wind was blowing at 20-30 mph and the temperature was about 40.  Who knows what the wind chill factor was, but I knew it was way too cold to stand there and paint.  I sat in my car and did a pencil sketch and took many photos.  I kept hoping it would warm up.  I drove around hoping the wind would die down.  Finally, I had to leave.  This scene captures the immense beauty of Zion.  The actually spot is the Kolob Canyons area.

Oil Painters of America show plein air painting by BECKY JOY

8x10 oil plein air $400. Along the Ceour d'Alene River. Click here to purchase.

I hadn't posted all of my paintings from my trip to the Oil Painters of American show and painting in Zion. This is one of the paintings from Ceour d'Alene. While I was painting at this location, I saw a moose with her baby feeding along the edge of the river in the grasses. They kept close to the bushes and the baby was visible only a few times. I wasn't able to get a good photo of the little one.
This was such a peaceful location and sooo... quiet. Nice!
Today I finished boxing up some paintings to send off to a new gallery in Jackson, WY. I will now be showing my work at Raindance Gallery.
Tomorrow I need to start getting paintings ready for another gallery.
Talk to you all later.

American Impressionist Society acceptance, Becky Joy

I just found out that my painting, The Source, was accepted into the 12th annual National show of the American Impressionist Society held at Mountainsong Galleries in Carmel, Oct 15-Nov 15, 2001.

I'm thrilled that I got into the show. I was debating on it because I had not joined the group yet. After talking to my friend, Deb Groesser, about it, I joined and entered this one and got in! Thanks Deb! Deb got into the show too, so we will be meeting in Carmel.

I've been painting for a new gallery in Jackson Hole, Wy. I just finished everything, framed and partially packed. I'll finish the packing tomorrow. Now, I need to get some more work done for another gallery. That's a good thing.

Talk to you all later.

Tea Cup with Bluebird Painting "Tea Time" by Barbara Rudolph

"Tea Time"

Here is the new companion piece to "The Breakfast Blend" painting.   This one is called "Tea Time."   The blue and white china cup was from some photographs I took in "Winslow, Arizona" on "Route 66" at the famous "La Posada Hotel." It is "the last great railroad hotel" and is full of history.   It was designed by architect Jane Colter.   The hotel has been restored and it is a fun little stop to see all of the historic preservation as well as the ballroom and lovely gardens.   There is also a wonderful restaurant there called "The Turquoise Room" and the food is amazing.   This is where I took the pictures of the old china set.   I painted in the little bluebird on the cup and "Tea Time" will make the perfect companion piece to go with your "Breakfast Blend" painting, or wonderful by itself too.

I have a special going on now on this "giclee" on board until August 15th.   If you place your order before then it is only $75.00.   It will also come with a wood easel and free shipping in the U.S.   (only until August 15th) It will be at regular price after that.   It measures 7"x7" and will compliment any room. It is also a great "gift" size.
If you would like to pre-order one now, just drop me an email.

LEAPING LIZARDS  17 X 20 oil on canvas

When you live in the desert lizards dart out when least expected from under rocks and branches , disappearing as fast as they appear. Where do they go so full of speed and knowing where the coolness is. There is a particular spot where we walk in the desert and almost always one lizard beckons me to become small and take a ride into the work unknown.  I just had to show a little person, (or a big lizard)  headed out for the day.

5x7 oil Sunlit Road
Two things I love in paintings are roads and sunsets which I combined in this painting. Having a road gives a little color to the foreground creating more interest, rather than having all one value. It also gives a chance to have some reflected light in the painting. As I move forward in the painting, I use more paint creating texture and interest. I think it makes for a more interesting painting by having variety in the texture.

Farm field sunset oil painting by Becky Joy

Sunset Fields 11x14
Hi everyone,
I have this painting on hold right now. I think it has a destination.
I started with a photo of tree shapes. No, actually I started with the sky as a sunset. The sun was on the side where the trees are. Then I decided to put some trees into the painting. They kept growing, soon I wiped out the sky and kept the trees. Then, I needed to fit a landscape with the trees. I decided to put the fields in with a little irrigation water catching the light of the sun. I've always liked those glints of light in the fields. Lastly, I painted the sky with the sun peaking through the clouds. Anyway, the painting ended as something entirely different that what I started with. It doesn't always turn out successful when heading in that direction, but this one worked.

Tomorrow my guest post will be on 7Sentences http://ow.ly/5FNLV . Check it out for Sat., about inspiration.

Oil sunset landscape painting by BECKY JOY

I've been on a roll lately with painting sunsets. I needed to get some done for a gallery. Now it was time to get some done for me. I really enjoy painting sunsets because I can play with color and use my imagination. This was one of those paintings from my imagination. I just sent out my newsletter this morning. I know, it was a little late. I'm slacking right now, need to pick it up. I also need to paint more small paintings.
This painting is varnished, or will be by the time it is mailed. It is priced unframed, comes with a free display easel and FREE shipping in the US.
Talk to you all tomorrow.

Sedona Agave

Sedona Agave
Oil, 8" X 10" $275

Certainly the Red Rock formations of Sedona are the main attraction, but often there are subtle more intimate scenes that ask to be painted.  The Red Rock cliffs are in the background but the agave bushes are so typical of the area.  My attraction to the interplay of light led me to this scene.

LAURELEA KIM Costa Rica Tree

Costa Rica Tree
47
by Laurelea Kim

This is the tree that lived outside the window while we were in Costa Rica.
I had to do small watercolors because of the space needed for our
travels.  I thought of this tree as an example of patience and fortitude, as it hung over the side of a steep  cliff and weathered the changes in the wind, which reflected in the curves of its trunk. These trees are very tall with the leaf growth at the  top and for a few weeks in the fall (spring here) they flower .

BECKY JOY Escalante, Zion plein air oil paintings

The Green Door 9x12 oil plein air.
This old truck was in the Escalante, UT area. I was on a painting trip with Deb Groesser when we were driving around in the middle of the day looking for subject matter to paint. We both love old vehicles and junk. She painted the shed with the tractor and junk, I went for the old pickup. It was a really, really hot, hot day with the sun beating down on us. (You get the picture.) During the middle of the day the sunlight can flatten out the landscape, so I usually try to look for an object, something more intimate to paint, like this vehicle. The shadow and light and ultimately the color are better for painting. Although for this painting I was in the sunlight, not good. When I got home and looked at the painting, I realized that my background did not give enough contrast. There was red rock behind the truck. I later simplified the background and lightened it so that the truck stands out.

The green door amongst the warm colors of the rusted body drew me to the truck. I placed some broad, confident strokes on that door so that it stands out even more than the color which is in contrast with the warm reds of the landscape.

The Lifeline of the Desert 9x12 oil plein air.
This is the plein air piece that I did in Zion and used as the reference for the painting that I posted yesterday.

"Quiet Waters"

"Quiet Waters"
Oil, 8" X 10"  $275

It is intriguing to see what color and brushstrokes can do to a scene.  Here bold brushstrokes create the rushing waters and the rough textures of the rocks.  Simpler brushstrokes represent the calmer waters.  This painting reflects the daily rhythms of our lives, periods of serenity and periods of movement, whether that movement is joy or necessity.

This is part of my "Oak Creek" Sedona series.

ZION desert oil landscape painting by BECKY JOY

"Lifeline" oil 16x20

Hi everyone,
I'm still working on photographing all my paintings from Zion. This is painted from one of the plein air paintings outside of Zion. We drove over to a little ghost town and saw the water meandering through the field and wash. I loved the shape of the ribbon of water. That is what originally drew me to the scene. I needed to recompose the original painting. I felt that the plants weren't in the right place and a background tree I had almost in the middle of the upper field. Anyway, after two or three days of off and on painting, I finally finished the painting. About time!
I just got some news in the last two days. I will be participating in the plein air festival in Oregon along the Columbia Gorge. As many of you know, I am from Oregon, born and raised there. It wasn't until I was about 45 that I moved away. I've always wanted to paint along the gorge, so I thought I would plan my trip to visit family with the show. My family lives a little south of Portland, but I have a couple of friends along the gorge that I will have the opportunity to get together with. I'm really looking forward to the visit and to meet new painter friends up there.
I've been filling out apps lately and finishing some works for shows. The dreaded apps, hate taking the time out for them. Yuck!
I'll talk to you all later. Hope your weekend was a good one.

"Red White and Blue" Oil Painting "Arriving In Style"

"Arriving In Style"

I was trying to think of a painting that I have that is "Red White and Blue" for the "4th of July" ... that is also still available.  This oil painting "Arriving In Style" is "Red White and Blue."   It is painted on gallery wrapped canvas so the design continues around the edges of the canvas.  The size is 20x20x1.50.   It features a mother "bird" waiting for her eggs to hatch in style.  It is priced at $2000. but for the month of July only I will offer this painting for sale at "half price".  It was a lot of work and is also a very cheerful painting that will brighten up any room.  You can contact me with any questions or if you would like to see a high resolution photograph.

Your comments are welcome too.
