Landscape oil of the Superstitions by BECKY JOY

The Superstitions 18x24 oil by Becky Joy
I've painted at the Superstitions many times and I used to stop there in the late afternoon after visiting my son when he lived close to the Superstitions. The afternoon sunlight on the mountains around the desert glow with a warm light, absolutely beautiful.
This painting has energetic brushstrokes with the bushes. I had a wonderful time painting it.

The painting is priced unframed.

Mt. Hood 6x6 oil landscape.

I painted this in Washington looking across the Columbia Gorge onto Mt. Hood in Oregon. I was participating in the Pacific Northwest Plein Air Festival in Hood River along the Gorge. We spent the morning at a vineyard in Washington. This was my final painting before I packed up the paints and spent some time visiting my family then headed home to Arizona.

Prescott House plein air oil painting by BECKY JOY

The Corner House 6x6 oil landscape

I painted this in Prescott, AZ as a demo in a workshop that I taught. The last day of the workshop we went to town to paint some old homes. The trees shade a lot of the homes making it difficult to find houses with a good view and some light on them. This corner house was exposed and had some light on it. I liked the pattern of the yellow light.

The title came to me when I noticed how the sea salt and the red pepper flakes were leaning into each other. It probably comes from the intense study required to paint them - I begin to interact with my compositions on an emotional level. These two looked like a loving couple, but then again, maybe I've been painting too long!

Bluebird on Double Bass - "Singing the Blues" by Barbara Rudolph

"Singing The Blues"
14"x14"
Oil on Canvas

This new oil painting of a "double bass" has an "Indigo Bunting" sitting on the bridge of the instrument.  I photographed this antique bass at the "Musical Instrument Museum" here in town.  If you haven't been yet, it is a museum not to miss because it is simply spectacular.  This museum called the "MIM" has the most wonderful collection of musical instruments from every country in the world.  This "double bass" was labeled probably from Germany or the Czech Republic dated 1930-1945.

"Singing the Blues" was a fun painting.  I received a comment that the instrument overpowered the little "bluebird".   Yes it does, but I kind of like it that way.  What do you think?  Your comments on my personal blog are very much appreciated too.  Thank you.

You can see more photos of this instrument on

La Primera, 6x9 watercolor / pen & ink by Stevie Denny

La Primera is the Mother of the California Missions, San Diego de Alcala.  Founded on July 16, 1769 by Padre Junipero Serra, it was the first in a series of missions built throughout California to protect Spain's interests in the territory.

Since I grew up in Southern California, I've visited a few of the missions, but I've wanted to visit all of them and paint them.  So two weeks ago, I began my "Mission Tour".  My sister-in-law Michele and I went to three missions in the San Diego area:  San Diego de Alcala, San Luis Rey and San Juan Capistrano.  We took hundreds of photos, and we had a great time.

The missions were built along El Camino Real, which still exists today (well, parts of it).  Highway 101 in California follows El Camino Real.  All the missions are beautiful, and they are all very different; but I was especially taken by the beauty of Mission San Diego.  If you visit California, be sure to visit a mission and experience early California history.

SUNRISE 6x6 landscape oil on canvas board
Click here to bid. Starting bid $75.

I got up early this morning and saw the wonderful clouds that just had to be painted. I quickly grabbed the easel, paints and brushes and got to work on this plein air painting.  Of course, the light was changing quickly as the sun came up, but I was able to get the essence of the scene. When you stare at the light, you often see at dash of green. I put that small dot of green that my eyes saw.
I am getting back into the swing of painting small paintings that I will post on this blog. Each of the paintings will go up for bid on the dailypaintworks auction starting with a bid of $50. So, check it out.

Prescott oil painting workshop by Becky Joy

Prescott House, Morning 9x12 oil
This was the last day of a 3 day plein air workshop that I taught in Prescott, AZ. It was a small class of several people that I already knew. We had a lot of fun going to some new places and painting all kinds of things.
I stayed at my friend Marla Smith's ranch. The first day we went up the road to the McDonald's Farm. It was an old, old farm with lots of fun things to paint including old trucks. I started the workshop with a demo of the field and trees. Then in the afternoon I painted a small painting of an old truck.
The second day we went to Skull Valley and painted at another old farm. A very interesting place with the barn converted to a three story house and lots of antiques and a Windsor Rat Rod complete with the bullet holes. The fields were full of the big old cottonwoods lining the creek bank and the driveways. It was really beautiful there. Then we moved onto Granite Lake in the afternoon where the reflections were just wonderful in the afternoon light.
The third day was spent in Prescott painting old houses. It was a variety of subject matter for the students and an adventure of discovery of new places. A great 3 days. Lots of fun and learning.
I'll be posting more of the photos of the workshop coming up.

"International Guild of Realism Show" - Get Real in Santa Fe - by Barbara Rudolph

This is the beautiful cover on the October issue of "American Art Collector Magazine" that just came out. No...the bird on the cover is not mine, but what a fantastic painting by artist Frank Gonzales. After two weeks of not feeling well because of a bad cold, I was so excited to receive my copy of the October issue of "American Art Collector" magazine on my doorstep today.
Get Real - The International Guild of Realism has a 16 page spread on the upcoming "Realism" exhibition in the October issue of American Art Collector. The show is being hosted by the beautiful "Sage Creek Gallery" The opening is on September 30th from 5-8pm. It will hang through October 22nd.

It came as a complete surprise that my "All That Jazz"  (Above) painting was selected for a full page advertisement for the show. I feel completely humbled by this and am truly honored to be part of this incredible group of artists that span the globe. The exhibition will have 75 works from contemporary to classical realism bringing together the worlds leading realism artists in Santa Fe.
Be sure and pick up a copy of this magazine which is also featuring the "art of the nude." If you would like any information about this painting you can contact the "Sage Creek Gallery" for information and view the entire selection of work for the "International Guild of Realism" show on their website. It's been so long since I've posted to my blog. I'm embarrassed!! I have been painting though. This is the latest painting. An abstraction of a horse in very ornate riding gear. This piece will be donated to the Mesa Art Center's 10x10 Show. The show's held every year to benefit the Mesa Art Center. The reception is always on October 10th. It's fun to see who selects your painting. Not fun, if no one selects your painting!!

Some personal and household issues have needed attention. Glad to be back in the swing with the paint brush.

"Las Florecillas", 10x10 oil on deep-edge canvas By Stevie Denny

I've posted studies of this piece in the past that were done in watercolor, but I painted this one in oil.  I don't paint many pieces in a 10x10 size, but it's for the Mesa Arts Center 10x10 Benefit Show and Sale on Monday, October 10.  All paintings in the show are sold for $100 each, and all proceeds benefit Mesa Contemporary Arts exhibition and educational programs. For those of you who live or work in northeast Mesa, you may recognize the lamp with the flowers in this painting.  My inspiration came from the courtyard at Rancho de Tia Rosa Restaurant on McKellips near Val Vista.

"Sometimes, you just have to let it slide."

 ~a-work-in-progress~
6" x 6" acrylic on canvas panel
I haven't decided if this one will be for sale or not.

Morning light filters through our window blinds on a few of Brian's guitar slides.
I love the reflections in the metal slide.
This painting is almost done. I still need to finish bringing the sunshine in with highlights here and there, as well as a few minor tweaks on the metal slide.
I can work on these small canvases in the house, without being too isolated from Brian while I paint, so you will probably be seeing more of these smaller works from me for a while, although I am still working on the giant canvas 'Matheson Hammock Memories' too.

"Men plan and god laughs." ... old Yiddish proverb
I started this year with a plan. To chronicle, 'A YEAR IN THE LIFE' , a year in my life as an artist, with a focused plan to grow my art business and expand my art endeavors. I looked forward to seeing where that new, more focused approach would take me.
Then, on a dime, in March, the plan changed. Brian's lymphoma returned and I had to put my 'YEAR IN THE LIFE' project, along with a posting here on Daily Painters of Arizona, on hold.

Being there for, and taking care of this man, my best friend, my husband Brian, is (happily) getting almost every bit of my attention.
So, in the spirit of this painting's title, I'm learning to let a lot of other (less important) stuff slide right now. And it's ok. It's been necessary to help me these last 6 months.
My (overgrown!) flower beds are actually pretty, in a wild untamed sort of way, and adjustments with what chores are really necessary everyday, has allowed me to still find small snippets of painting time.
Using these small canvases allows me to paint near Brian, to be close by if he needs me.

This newest Non-Hodgkins lymphoma journey has certainly had it's ups and downs.
The most recent up- the chemo is working! (as per PET scan results).
The most recent down- Brian, weak from chemo treatments, fell and broke his back last Sunday night.
Our whole journey, thus far, is chronicled on my blog page, B's journey.

Thanks for visiting.... and please consider visiting my blog and becoming a new follower while you're there.
My (somewhat lofty) goal is to perhaps hit 50 followers by years end.

Still life roses oil painting by Becky Joy

Roses and Grapes 8x10 oil.
Hi everyone!
This is a painting that had been around for a while, but not finished. Today I took it out of storage and added a few details and a little more color in places. It was a fun piece to paint with the leaves going every which way.
I've been trying to clean up things in the studio. Way too many unfinished projects along with desk work piling up.  I'm probably pretty typical in that I get everything cleaned up and organized, then...... Oh, well. I guess that's the way I am.
I'll probably post something tomorrow that has been unfinished in storage also. Check out the new website with a guest post by Expressionist painter and life coach, Diane Olsen, at http://artworkshopsonline.com

This piece was done for a friend of Michael Jackson who had a
shared love of antiques including Carousel Horses. This piece really
meant a lot to me because I am a huge Michael Jackson fan.
We basically took an old antique horse and restored him in the
painting to look more magical. We kept the basic color scheme and some
of the jewels but we brightened it up and added more decorations.

Talavera Pottery still life painting by Becky Joy

Talavera and Oranges 11 x 14 oil
Hi everyone,
I finished this still life today with the talavera pottery coffee pot, oranges and grapes. I added the glass vase with foliage, because I like a more informal still life and I liked the reflections. Both the oranges and grapes are very reflective.
I used to paint a lot of still lifes with oranges and lemons. They were always available since I had the trees in my yard, but at my new place my trees that I planted are not producing, yet.
You should check out the guest blog post I have on my new website Art Workshops Online. Diane Olsen, an artist, life coach and workshop instructor wrote an article, Color Your World. It's really a good read.

Farm Field oil landscape by BECKY JOY

FLOWER FIELD oil 12x16

Hi on this great Tuesday,

The weather is starting to cool down here in Phoenix now. It was a wonderful morning to sit outside for breakfast. Lots of interesting clouds to look at too. And you know, that's one of the things that I love to paint. I check out the clouds every day, but this morning I was also sitting watch the ants. Interesting critters. Amazing how they work together.

Today was a day of pulling out some old paintings an retouching, redoing, whatever they needed. This one needed work on the field. I had too bright of greens and too few flower in the painting. It just wasn't working for me. It was a little garish in the color. I wanted it a warmer, softer color with more flowers to make it more exciting. The flowers add more depth to the scene and give you a visual path to lead you into it. It's the kind of painting that you can get lost in with the imagination. Who lives in that house? What are all the buildings? Is it still in use? Any kids? It's a scene that could be almost anywhere. Where does it look like to you?

Talk to you all later.

landscape sunlight oil painting by BECKY JOY

"Morning Reflection" oil 18x24
Hi everyone!
I received an honorable mention with Morning Reflection at the Arizona Plein Air Artists Annual Show in Sedona, AZ. The second painting that I entered received the Artists' Choice Award.
This was a painting from my imagination. I wanted to use a lot of cool grays in the painting to play off of the bright sunlit colors. I felt like it was a contest within myself to see how many colors I could get in the painting in the grays. It was an exercise in color. The colors become cooler and less saturated as I moved away from the light.
This weekend I have mostly been working on my website trying to organize, simplify and get a new look. It is really a job to get all the information that you want on a website, but keep it simple and navagable. How do you like the new look?
Talk to you all tomorrow!

Columbia gorge landscape painting by BECKY JOY

Afternoon Light on the Rocks
6x8 oil on canvas panel.
Long day here in the studio. Still trying to catch up on things. Why does it take so long? Is it me?
This plein air painting is another one from the Columbia River. I was in Washington looking across the river into Oregon during the late afternoon. Almost all was in sunlight. The rocks had a very warm feel and look to them with the shadows having the most contrast in the scene.
This was at a very little used park that had an old orchard and lots of blackberries. One thing I always do while in Oregon during the summer is pick blackberries. I guess it brings back childhood memories of picking the berries, then we got a pie. Now I don't bother with the crust, but I did make a blackberry cobbler. Mmmm... wish I could have brought some home to Arizona.
If you haven't seen my new website Art Workshops Online, check it out. Next week I will have a guest blogger on. I'll let you know about it, but it should be very interesting.

Flowers Sunflower oil painting by BECKY JOY

Sunflowers and Pomegranates 24x18" oil on canvas

Hi everyone,
Some of you may not even know that I paint still lifes. It has been way too long since I have. I used to paint them fairly often, especially sunflowers. So, I figured that it was time to do so. This is one that I actually had started, but never finished. Luckily I had the pomegranates painted since they aren't in season right now. I had been wanting to paint sunflowers, so I finished these flowers and tablecloth and added a few bold strokes to the painting. I will probably paint some more in the next few weeks. I'm trying to get a few larger pieces done. Although, not as large as I used to paint.
Before the economic downturn (or whatever you want to call this), I painted large and I mean large. Common sizes for me to paint were 36x48, 40x60, and 48x60. I've even painted as large as 7'x11'. So the small ones, 6x6" were a struggle when I first started painting them, but I now love painting them. Always something new on the easel.
Check it out.

Little Bottle and Garlic- by Li Mahalik

Northwest Plein Air, Hood River by BECKY JOY

Morning on the Columbia oil 6x6"
This is one of the first paintings that I painted while at the Northwest Plein Air in Hood River. I was on the Washington side of the river looking toward the morning sun in the east. I liked the slight bit of warmth in the clouds contrasting with all the cool colors of the distant mountains and water. A very subtle painting with variations in the grays. As with all my small paintings the shipping is free in the US and the painting comes with a small black wrought iron display easel.
I spent quite a bit of time on the computer today just catching up after being gone for two weeks. My access on the phone was limited, but it was very useful. I like using my new smart phone. Tomorrow, more catching up and maybe a little painting.

I'm finally back home from my Oregon trip, visiting family, friends and participating in the plein air show in Hood River along the gorge. I met some new friends and got to know some a little better. It was a great trip. I really enjoyed all of it.  I stayed with a couple on the Washington side of the river, a beautiful home and very nice enjoyable couple.
We painted for 5 days in a different location each day, a vineyard, a working farm, trust property, along the river at a park (which is the location of this painting), and the marina, which I didn't participate in that day. I went back to my parents to visit family. Each location was unique and beautiful. All that I painted were small. I was very limited on size and packed my frames in my suitcase, which of course meant that my clothes were really at a minimum. It was more the painting things than personal belongings. I got the important stuff there. I think if I did it again I would ship a little larger frames up there beforehand. I feel more comfortable painting 8x10 to 11x14 when painting in plein air. Oh well, I learned and it wasn't bad, but I would have liked the bigger canvases better. Also, I forgot to take some good photos of the paintings that I left there for the show.
I had talked to my good friend Jerry Fenter, an artist and writer that lives on the gorge. (Actually, we met for coffee that turned into lunch). Jerry told me that I should try to get up to Mount Adams to see the wildflowers. The day after I finished painting I took my mom and her walker on a 1 1/2 mile hike up the mountain to the meadows at the flanks of Mt. Adams. Jerry was right. The flowers were absolutely spectacular this year. I didn't paint since I was with my mom, but got plenty of photos that I may work on for some paintings.

Here is a waterfall about 30' high that I walked down into. It looked like a grotto with all the green on the floor.

A View to Zion

" A View to Zion"
9" X 12"  Oil   $325

Along one of the back roads in Zion National Park, there are views of the large rock formations of Kolob Canyon.  I wanted to show, in paint, the enormous scale of the rock formations and the almost never ending views.
