Desert Sunset palo verde tree by BECKY JOY

I have this painting, 16x20 on canvas panel

I painted this tree from my imagination. I have done plenty of them in plein air so I am familiar with them. I love the free form of the tree which makes it a perfect subject for using the imagination. I start with a dark form for the overall design, then a lot of back and forth with positive and negative shapes. I had a lot of fun playing with the color also. It is backlit, so the warmer colors on the tree peak out from behind and the front, away from the light source, is cooler in color.

zion mt. carmel utah plein air oil painting by BECKY JOY

These two plein air painting, 6x8 are available on my website.
I painted both of these on my plein air trip to Zion. The canyon piece was the first of the day in a marathon painting day from dawn to dusk, too tired for a nocturnal piece.
I painted a larger painting today from the canyon piece. It has taken me several days. With the heat at 115 degrees the last two days in Phoenix, I have found it difficult to have the energy to do anything. I'll just keep at it, just slower.
When I was in Coeur d'Alene, I had an art rep approach me. I have wavered on how I feel about it. At times I think it would be great to have someone take over part of the business from me, but on the other hand, I feel a loss of control and not sure if it would be in the direction that I want to go. It has been and continues to be so important to me to improve as an artist and I'm not sure that that can happen with a rep.
Well, talk to you all tomorrow.

Celebrity Icons

"Skeletons Celebrating Life" takes a new turn.  Somebody suggested to me that this famous Marilyn Monroe pose from "The Seven Year Itch" might make an intteresting subject.  I was in agreement, painted it and have since done more Celebrities.  Watch for them.  They are for sale exlusively at Ugallery

"Little Brown Vase" by Li Mahalik

Oil on Gessoed Masonite, 11"x14"
***
Sometimes, setting up subject matter to paint is more difficult than painting. In the studio, we juggle with the objects and try to come up with a worthy setting to paint. Often times it's a hit and miss. But the spotlight is always a lifesaver. It can suddenly bring the setting to life and create a dramatic effect. The kind of the light gives a particular temperature to the setting, ranging from cool to warm. The table cloth and the material in the background make a big difference, too.

Six of my small paintings, mostly abstract, have be chosen to the

The Narrows

"The Narrows"
Oil on Linen, 9" X 12"  $325

The Narrows, In Zion National Park, is a very popular hiking spot.  Actually, there is not a trail, you put on water boots and hike up the Virgin River.  The colors of Zion are intriguing.  The way light bounces around mixing sunlight and shadow is one of the many reasons to paint here.

Utah Zion plein air oil painting by Becky Joy

I just got back from my trip to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho for the Oil Painters of America show, then on to Whitefish, MT for some visiting, hiking and a little painting. The last leg of the trip I went to Mt. Carmel, UT where I met my friend, Deb Groesser, to paint in the Zion, Mt. Carmel, and Escalante area for three days. We stayed at an artists retreat in Mt. Carmel, which was Maynard Dixon's home. It was a wonderful place including the grounds.

The first painting was from the town of Springville, Utah at a park late in the afternoon. The only light left was hitting the tops of the hills, lighting up the rocks and trees, some of my favorite lighting to paint. It's a rush, literally. The painting measures 6x8 and is for sale on my website

This second painting measures 8x10 and is for sale on my website   I painted this painting from the Maynard Dixon property in the morning looking across the road at Mt. Carmel. The warm colors of the sunlit rocks brings that part of the painting to your center of interest. I echoed the color in the house and some in the foreground trees. The mountains have so much color it is hard to stay on task and keep the shapes simple and not break it up with too much stuff going on.

I have more photos that I will be posting, but I also have some photoshopping to do and a few touch ups on some of the paintings. So, I'll talk to you all later.

Reflections on Cathedral Rock

"Reflections on Cathedral Rock"
Oil on Linen, 9" X 12"

At times it is difficult to believe that in one painting there can be the red rock formations that symbolize the Southwest and the dark blue of a stream.  These all come together in Sedona.  This painting is based on a recent plein air study.  I am fascinated by light and the reflections of light.

"Bluebird Oil Painting and The Color Blue" by Barbara Rudolph

"Bluebird"

"The color blue" is found in so many species of "birds".  These "birds" are also some of the most attractive birds seen in North America. So many people love "Bluebirds" and the color "Blue".  I love to paint them too.  I know that many of them are not actually "Blue", but just appear to be "blue" because of the way the light reflects upon the feathers.  I find that very interesting and either way, I still see them as a beautiful "blue" color.

I was trying to think of how many "birds" I could name that are "Blue."  I came up with quite a few: "Indigo Buntings", "Eastern Bluebirds", "Western Bluebirds", "Belted Kingfishers", "Tree Swallow", "Cerulean Warblers", "Blue Grosbeak", "Nuthatch", "Blue Jays", "Mexican Jay", "Mountain Bluebirds", some "Macaws", "Peacocks", "Dove", "Quail", and "Hummingbirds."  I love the iridescent colors on the throat feathers of many of the "hummingbird" species.  I am sure there are many others but I just can't name any more off the top.  I just wish I had a few of them around my own yard.

What does the color "blue" represent?  I did a quick search and found the answer to be:   The sky, infinity, truth, youth, spirituality, and peaceful.  Everything I could find was calming and happy.  Maybe that's why they call the "Bluebird" "The Bluebird of Happiness." What I don't understand is why does one describe a sad feeling as being "Blue"? (That one I cannot explain.)

The oil painting above is a detail of a little "Bluebird" I just finished.  It is actually an "Indigo Bunting."  It is an oil on canvas 7 x 7".   It found a good home and I do hope it will make them very happy too.

"Creamer" by Li Mahalik

Oil on Linen panel, 12"x12"

*****
Like I did my previous painting, "Mr. Eucalyptus", I painted this in the studio looking out through the arcadia doors to the subjects I set up outside. I didn't need to do much, because in the sunshine everything looks perfect and beautiful! Just make sure we don't paint them from the morning to the afternoon because the shadow will change from one side to the other, seemingly more obvious than landscape in plein air.

"Mr. Eucalyptus" by Li Mahalik

Oil on Linen Canvas, 14x11
***
Mr. Eucalyptus is a big tree in my neighbor's back yard. A couple of hawks like to rest high on it's branches in the spring. I wanted to study painting trees and this is the closest I could find. So I did a plein air in my A/Ced studio looking out the arcadia doors of this grand tree. It was very warm at 104 degree  in Scottsdale today!

Quality Time, 5x7 watercolor by Stevie Denny

My son Chris loves to spend time at the beach with his boys.  I painted this as a Father's Day card for him.  He's a good dad, and I'm so proud of the person he has become.

Glow of the Ancient Pueblo

Oil, 8" X 10" $250

The Ancestral Pueblo people of the Southwest created amazing cities.  The light of the Southwest dances across these buildings.  Even the shadows glow with light.  Capturing the interplay of light is fascinating in art.

Aspen Cool

Aspen Cool
Oil,  8" X 10"  $250

There is a coolness inside an grove of Aspens.  There is a shimmer between the white that is drenched by the sun and the fresh green of the plants that have been dormant under snow.  We all know the smell. These are reasons for painting this, to call us back to simple memories, and this is why we have art in our homes.

Sharon's Cabin, 4x6 watercolor by Stevie Denny

A few weeks ago, I went with my husband to a conference in Big Bear, CA.  At the same time, my friend Sharon from Burbank was staying at her cabin near our hotel. It's a delightful little cabin that she bought 9 years ago, and over the years she has been fixing it up.  It looks like a little doll house -- so cute.  We had a great time for the few days I was in Big Bear -- riding around the lake, going on the tour boat, shopping at the farmer's market, and having lunch at a delightful tea house -- and sharing many old memories of our days in Burbank (my home town).

Becky Joy at Oil Painters of America show

Hi everyone from not so sunny Coeur d'Alene, ID. Well, sometimes sunny. The weather here is typical of the northwest at this time of year. It didn't rain today, but it has been cloudy, sunny, a little rain, then cloudy again. It doesn't make it easy for plein air painting, but I'm tryin'. Actually, it has been a lot of fun.

I'm at the OPA show right now. Yesterday was my first day out painting. I went to a couple of sites, the bridge is the first one. The painting in the afternoon is still in the car. I forgot to take a photo of it. I met some of the other artists that were out painting, but today I went my own way. I went out to the old mission and beyond. I painted the top painting of the mountains, water and trees (another cloudy painting).

While I was out there, I saw a moose with her newborn calf. The calf was hidden most of the time, but every once in a while I got a glimpse of the baby as it followed the mother, coming out of the bushes. I think it was absolutely the smallest one that I have seen. It is amazing what you see as you are out painting. After painting for a while, you are so quiet and concentrated on painting that animals will start to come out into the open. I think they must think I'm a fixture and non-threatening, so out they come. Pretty neat!

This afternoon I went to the informal welcome reception where I met a few friends I've met at other shows and a couple of online painters. I also introduced myself to some artists that I have admired, exciting. Tomorrow I have signed up for the Scott Christensen demo, as have a lot of other artists. I had better get there early for a good seat.

I'm also going to the lecture "How to Get Published" with Collin Fry. Tomorrow night will be the show opening at the gallery and awards. In between will be the vendors with their products, that was fun last year.
Saturday is full in the morning, but I may have time to paint some in the afternoon. I saw an old flatbed truck close to the hotel. That might be an easy one without driving around too much.

I'll post again before the weekend is over to let you know what is going on and how the lectures and demos go. Talk to you all later.

I seek to create a sense of place within the landscape and within the heart.  What greater reward after a hike is there than a mountain lake and some large rocks to have lunch on before hiking out?  From the trees to the mountains to the meadow can there be a better view?
