Plein air invitational at Sedona painting by Becky Joy

Arches 10 x 8 oil landscape
This is one of my paintings from the Sedona Plein Air Invitational. I didn't have the values quite deep enough, but I loved the colors and composition. So, I repainted some of this one today. This was painted during the quick draw at Tlaquepaque, a unique shopping area. It has the feel of old Mexican buildings. There are so many things to paint in this area.

I took off during the middle of the day to grocery shop, ride my bike, etc. By the time I finished the painting it was too dark to photograph. I will rephotograph it in the morning and replace the photo. The colors are wonderful in this painting.

Talk to you all tomorrow.

plein air oil landscape truck painting by BECKY JOY

Taos, NM truck, plein air oil, 6x8
I painted this a while back when I was traveling the high road between Taos and Santa Fe. I've always been a sucker for antique autos. I love the history and the imagination that goes with it. Who drove the truck, where did they live, what kind of lives. You get the picture.

I just got back home last night after being in Sedona for the plein air invitational. I worked hard from dawn to sunset and then some. Almost every day I was setting up before the sun rose, then painted all day until the sun set. I even painted at night at Tlaquepaque. The show went well, I sold some and then took some new paintings over to Windrush Gallery in Sedona. I caught up with some old friends and met plenty of new ones. I had a great time and felt that I learned a lot.

Kevin MacPherson gave a lecture about his pond series that was wonderful. His whole series was on exhibition at the Sedona Arts Center. It was wonderful to see in its entirety. I had seen his book before, but of course, the real deal always surpasses the photos.

Today was some catching up with office work and tomorrow some more.

Talk to you later.

From a recent painting trip to Colorado.  I came across this cemetery in Idaho Springs, CO.  I was intrigued by the colors, shapes, textures, and the history.  The prominent tombstone in this painting is from 1880.  Can you imagine what life was like here 130 years ago?

BECKY JOY southern AZ old house daily painting

"The White House" 5x7 oil landscape
I painted this from a photo taken in Southern Arizona. I like quirkly, ramshackle buildings. I thought the garbage can added to the sense of scruffiness. I used both a palette knife and brush on this painting. Some paintings I feel lend themselves to more work with the palette knife. This was one of those.
Online workshops starting Nov 7, 4 week sessions $150.

Daily oil landscape sky, Moon Rising

"Rising Moon" 6"x6" oil on canvas panel.
I just got back a couple of days ago from California. First I participated in the San Luis Obispo Plein Air. I was really pleased with the painting that I did in the area. It is a favorite place of mine to paint (photos to come) and I have made some great friends in the area that I see every year. At the end of the trip I heard from my friend Deb Groesser who was in Laguna. She invited me down to stay and paint with her for a couple of days. It didn't take much convincing to get me down there. So as soon as the show closed in SLO, I was off to Laguna.
We first went toured around to see some artist friends participating in the Laguna Plein Air Festival, then she showed me her favorite places to paint. We painted in the afternoon, which I found very frustrating. I started chasing the light as it started with sunny weather then turned to fog. My painting was all over the place. I gave up and wiped it off.
The next morning we went down to Crystal Cove. I painted a foggy painting, then a sunny one. I'll put them on the website tomorrow. I really had a good time painting the light with the fog this time.
I then came home about 3 days later than planned. So I have been playing catch up this week and rest time too. As I drove across the desert a few days ago, the moon was rising. Since I was driving with no where to pull over and paint, I was trying to make mental notes about the colors and values of the sky, moon, light on the mountains and tops of some plants. This painting is about my impressions as the moon was rising in the desert.
I still have openings in my workshops, both online and ones in the Phoenix area.
Talk to you all later.

Violin and Tanager painting "Diva" by Barbara Rudolph

"Diva"

This new oil painting is of a "violin" dated from the 20th century with a "western tanager".   I decided to name it "Diva."  Yes, I know what you are thinking... a "Diva" is a celebrated glamorous "female" singer, a star, divine, and a goddess...but this is a painting of a "male" tanager.  Well..... being in the art world, you will have to trust me when I say that I have seen many "queens" & "princesses" of the opposite sex too, so I decided to go with the title "Diva" anyway because I think it fits.

This oil painting, "Diva" is 16 x 8" and will be for sale at "Jane Hamilton Fine Art" gallery, in Tucson, Arizona.  The show reception will be held on November 11th.  If you would like more information about this oil painting or the show, please get in touch with me or the gallery.

Family Spirit by Pat Stacy

FAMILY SPIRIT
24" x 24"x2.5"
Mixed Media on Canvas

This painting is a donation to the
St. John Vianney Gala on Oct. 22 at
the U.S. West Arena in Phoenix. It is
for the benefit of the elementary school.
It has a family under a triskelion--the
triskelion can have many meanings,
but the one in this case is "Father, Son,
and Holy Spirit". To the left of the
family, the Entity touched by the light
of the Creator looks on. The painted
frame has molded texture created of
fine sand and color mixed with acrylic.

"Plum Tree in Bloom" by Li Mahalik

Oil on Canvas, 40"x40"

Plum Blossom is also called Meihua. As I recall, it is the national flower of Taiwan, symbolizing perseverance, hope, beauty and purity. It stands for the principles and values of virtue because it blossoms in the cold winter. Meihua has been one of the favorite subjects for the poets and painters for thousands of years in China. Together with pine tree and bamboo, they were called "Three Friends of Winter".
I painted Plum Blossom a couple of times before never translating it as Meihua! This time I did a little research and realized how dumb I've been.

Sonoran Spring, 9x12 oil on linen panel by Stevie Denny

People often think of the desert as bland and colorless, but the Sonoran Desert is full of beauty.  It is a carpet of color during the spring, when the wildflowers bloom in abundance.  I painted this scene from a photo I took in the Bartlett Lake area during the wildflower season.  The slightly higher elevation produces more foliage and blooms; and the saguaros seem to like it better, too.
