 Hi everyone, I started this painting as an example for one of my students in my online workshop to show her a couple of points. This morning I looked at it and liked what I had started. So I repainted it and filled it out more having my daily painting done. I actually had to almost paint a third one. When I took it outside to photograph, I promptly dropped it in the dirt. Don't you hate it when that happens? And, it wasn't even a plein air painting.

I used what I call "simultaneous colors" in painting this. I mix like values of different colors and use them together in a single brushstroke. I have been using this technique more and more. I started painting this way a little about 2 years ago, but I found that I was too skimpy with the paint. Now, I'm trying to paint like I'm a "millionaire". Well, it sounds good.

I will be taking off for Tucson early on Thursday morning for a four day workshop with Kenn Backhaus. I'm really excited about it. I took a workshop from him about 8 years ago or so at the Scottsdale aritsts school. So, I know that he is a fabulous teacher. I'll let you know all about it.

Hi everyone, This is part of the series of 100 paintings for the AZ Centennial art  project about the 5 C's, cattle, copper, climate, citrus and cotton. 

Cattle is one of the 5 C's of Arizona. In this painting I have depicted a young calf from Southern Arizona. Cattle were first brought to the Arizona area by the Spanish. Cattle drives crossed Arizona from Texas on their way to the markets in Los Angeles. Evently, cattle were raised in Arizona and bound for the LA market on trains.

I love the full moons in the desert. With the clear, dry air you can see so many stars and the light of the moon glows off the plants and hits the desert floor. Beautiful. The yellow orange of the moon contrasts with the blues and violets of the painting.

This plein air painting from California, I was attracted to the bright yellow oranges against the violets of the fence. It was just wonderful colors in the homes to play with.  As I was painting the scene the mailman came and filled some of those boxes. I had some final touches to do to the painting afterward. I wanted a little more light coming through the fence. I had it too solid and I brightened the blue on the last house. It was mostly in shadow. I thought a touch more blue would complement the warm colors of the painting.

 I've been pretty busy lately with helping Mike on a house that he has been remodeling. I've been the occassional helper, but with putting on the roof, he has needed my help more. So, a little less painting, facebook and twitter. Back in the studio tomorrow.

"Whistle Stop", 16x20 oil painting by Stevie Denny

This was a painting I entered in last week's Centennial Exhibition "One Hundred Years Together"at the Gilbert Music and Arts Fest.  I painted this from a photo I took in Gilbert on November 12, 2011, when the Union Pacific Steam Locomotive 844 stopped in Gilbert as part of the Centennial Celebration.  Just as I was about to snap the photo, a man walked into the picture with his son on his shoulders, waving the American Flag.  I couldn't have planned it any better!

This painting is a rework of a plein air that I painted in Zion on a painting trip with my friend, Deb Groesser.

I liked the original painting, but I had a little too much going on. I needed to simplify the scene. So, I made the light and shadows more solid without so much dappled light. I still wanted the dark tree trunks against the light background so that there was a feeling of being under the trees in the shade.

The day was hot and the shade of the trees and a picnic table were very welcome.

Hi everyone, 

I recently took a workshop from Bye Bitney in an attempt to loosen my style up a bit. I would like to have parts of my painting almost have an abstract quality to them and I have always loved brushwork. This is my attempt to loosen up a bit since the workshop.

We worked almost entirely on figures working from models. It was so instructive, hard work and fun! I needed a few days of recuperation from the workshop. It was to bed early for me almost every night.

Plein air Best of Show at Glendale, AZ

Hi everyone, 

I've had a great week, but busy one. I've had two commissions to finish, which should be tomorrow. Today I took some time off to do to a plein air event in Glendale, AZ. The city hosts a one day plein air show. Last night I decided I had better go to it, because they had some good prizes. I painted two paintings, the first in the old town area of a couple of houses. I spent too much time on it and was off a little on the perspective. Time didn't help it. The second one I went out to Saguaro Ranch Park which is an old farm and citrus orchard. There are also various old buildings and farm equipment. I'm always a sucker for old stuff and junk. I found an old tractor and had a great time painting it. I was really fortunate to get Best of Show and win $1000. So, it was a great day!

 I spent the day in the studio painting and preparing canvases. I needed to record a video for my online workshop working on brushwork. I chose a photo to work from. I was drawn to the bright yellow trees in the wash with the contrast of the dark rocks behind them. I moved things around and changed colors a little. I wanted the light yellow/greens of the trees contrasting against the dark warm violets of the rocks. It was a fun painting to paint with the texture and colors. Rocks are always something that I enjoy painting.
