Mission Rose, 6x6 oil on Raymar panel by Stevie Denny

I don't know the name of this rose -- I haven't had time to research it; but it definitely has rose leaves.  I took pictures of this rose when I visited the San Fernando Mission in California last week, as part of my "Mission Tour" to visit all 21 California missions.  And I've learned that there were actually more than 21 missions -- there's a 22nd mission somewhere in Northern California that may no longer be standing.  There were also "Estancias" (ranches) and "Asistencias", which were sub-missions where travelers could stay.  I knew that the idea of the missions was that they would be built no more than a day's travel apart, but I always wondered how people could travel from  San Juan Capistrano to San Gabriel in one day.  That's quite a distance, especially in the late 1700s -- so the answer is that people stayed on friendly estancias (owned by Spanish land barons) or in Asistencias, which were placed in between the main missions.

The more I learn about the missions, the longer I realize it's going to take me to visit all these places.  But it's well worth it, and it provides good painting material.  6 down, and many more to go!

"Ancient Mother" has heavy texture reminiscent of  stone

and sand.  Done in neutrals, it is accented with copper and

turquoise.  the womb-like structure in the center has the

copper descending light of the Creator with a large Entity

looking one.  At the mouth of the womb are very dark, 

matte "souls" either past or present or waiting to be 

born.  A large dragon fly peeks out on the middle

right, and other symbols are found as well.  The painting

appears to be coming in the bright window, with 

a translucent blue Entity watching.  Who is

coming? What is watching?  Symbols are found

on the left.  Stamped with my hand made stamps

for interest and texture, the piece is done in

"Cactus Flowers", 12x16 oil on canvas by Stevie Denny

The cactus flowers have begun to bloom here in Arizona, and it's a delight to see so many different colors of prickly pear cactus and blossoms.  The pads on the prickly pear range in color from bright green to beautiful purples ands reds; and the blossoms are yellow, red, pink and sometimes a combination of all three.  It's a pleasure to look at all these when I ride my bike in the morning -- a nice way to start the day!

Saguaros by Sunset

The Impressionistic sunset was painted in Plein Air on the Deserts of Eastern Mesa. The Saguaro Forests are stunning at sunset. I was fortunate to see this sky after painting in the Superstition Mountains. I quickly set up my equipment and painted this as the light slowly faded. I am glad I was able to capture this on my canvas. The painting measures 8" x 6" and is painted in oil on mounted canvas.

Desert Spring 10"x8" plein air oil landscape .

This was painted out by Bartlett Lake outside of Phoenix during the spring. The yellow is the brittle bush and the blue lupine. Poppies are another flower that commonly  blooms here in the desert.  I like the sweep of the palo verde tree. It can be wild and untamed. Love it.

The painting is unframed and varnished.

I take off tomorrow morning for the Plein air convention, so posting may be erratic.

New Ebay auction starting at $0.99 and 2 new videos

River Reflections 9" x 12" oil landscape

This is a painting from a driving trip through Utah along Siever River. It was late afternoon and the sun had been coming in and out. I saw the light on the back of the river with the reflections that I had to paint after driving. It was a drive by camera shot.

 Tomorrow I'm picking my artist friend, Deb Groesser, up at the airport. We will immediately take off for painting at the Superstitions and then come back to my house. The next day we will be heading up to the Plein Air Convention. I will be taking my video camera and notes. I plan on posting more information about the whole thing later.
