"Lost Dutchman's Mine" by Li Mahalik

"Lost Dutchman's Mine", Oil on Canvas, 14 x 18

The Superstition Mountains near Apache Junction have become one of my favorite places to visit, either during a plein air workshop or a family outing. There is a cycle, rhythm and a pattern to the scenery that changes from season to season and from morning to dusk; the bushes come and go, and the mountains move with the sun. The challenge of this painting is to show the lightest light without making it look washed out; the values of shadows near and far.

I'd like to thank Amy for inviting me to join the Daily Painters of Arizona and I look forward to seeing and sharing paintings in the days to come. If you have any comment, suggestion or interest in this painting, please:
