The legend of the White Buffalo in Native American Cultures tells of Pte Sha Wi a sacred woman of supernatural origin who appeared to the Lakota almost 2000 years ago. She taught the people to worship, pray and have hope for peace among all men leaving a white buffalo calf as the symbol to remind the tribes to continue to hope. When Roman Catholic missionaries first came among the Lakota their stories of the Virgin Mary and Jesus became associated with the "White Buffalo Calf Woman" . The practice of identifiying Mary with Pte Sha Wi continues among some Lakota Christians to this day.White Buffalo Hope is currently showing at Gallery Encore in Fair Oaks California.
