The mix of shadow and sunlight are intriguing. It is always surprising where the light and shadow appear. We have all looked at a hillside and wondered where does this go? We have stood at the base of hills and wondered what would the journey be like to the top. In life we start at the base and journey upwards.
I first painted this scene as a small 8" X 10" plein air piece. It is a favorite of mine. One day while examining the plein air piece I realized that in a tall narrow format this piece would have depth and drama.
