"Roses and Bicycle VI" by Li Hua Mahalik

Mixed Media with Ink and acrylic, 12x9

Helen Frankenthaler, one of my favorite Color Field Artists, used acrylic for many of her important works after she famously painted Mountains and Sea in the 1950's with diluted oil paint on unprimed canvas. Acrylic is wonderful to use for abstract. I love how fast it dries, its overlaying effect and its fluidity, but I'm still reluctant to use it for the traditional painting because the color mixed can appear different when it dries.

Painterly Art-Fly, Baby Fly-by Li Mahalik

Oil on Gallery Canvas, 48"x48"

*****

Don't tie me down, love
I've taken a few trips over

There in my sleep
No greener grass, no sunset
And not a soul

Serenity is all encompassing in the deep
Blue

Silently. I have to fly
Over the mountain
Mountain of your love

Only there and then
We can become
Just one

This is a commissioned painting I did a few weeks back, so it's sold. A painting of this size is quite awesome in itself and the possibilities are many. A few strokes can change the composition dramatically. So, it was a matter of when to stop. I met the challenge and I think I did okay.

I hope you like the poem I wrote for the painting also.

"Teddy Bear" by Li Mahalik

Genesis Oil on Masonite, 6"x6"

Oh, what is the fuss
Bears roaming in the sunset
Looking for berries

Until recently, I never paid much attention to Haiku as a form for poems. I think I really like it. Sometimes it's a good start for writing a longer poem, kind of like starting an abstract painting with an idea, than letting it guide you deeper.

"Omnipresent" by Li Mahalik

Oil on Gallery Wrapped Canvas, 16x20

It was fun and different going back to a bigger canvas. A dear friend came to paint with me today. In between the conversations, I had room to ease my fixation and made this expedition a joyful one. Please come visit my blog to see more recent paintings, or my website to see other paintings. If you have any suggestions or comments, please feel free to contact me via my email.

"Route 66" by Li Mahalik

Oil on Gessoed Masonite, 6 x 6

This is the third 6"x6" abstract painting I did on one of the masonite panels I ordered a week ago and gessoed myself. Painting a small piece like this is quite different from doing a larger one. A size 10 brush can do what a 4" brush would on a bigger canvas. Modifying or even doing over is so much easier, so I'm loving it. Best of all, it gives a thumbnail view of what a bigger painting might look like, although the process and technique would be quite different from one to the other.

"The Merchant" by Li Mahalik

Oil on Gessoed Masonite, 6x6

Happy time is when splashing the colors on. Then comes the time to simplify, modify and decide when to call it finished.
