Bulldog Rocks

​Bulldog Rocks are in the Salt River wilderness area, just a few miles from where I live in Mesa, Arizona. People come from all over the world to see these giant rocks that look over the Salt River, especially when the late afternoon sun turns them to gold. The best place to view them is from a place called Water Users, off the Bush Highway (Water Users refers to the place where people put in kayaks and tubes on the Salt River). This is a TINY painting -- just 3x4 inches, but a cute little thing. It's not framed, and I don't recommend framing due to its small size. It would best be displayed on a small display easel, which I will happily provide for free to the buyer of this painting.

Garapata California plein air oil landscape paintings by BECKY JOY

Garapata Strength   5" x 7" oil on canvas panel $100.

I tried to take some photos of work in progress, but like usual I missed a few steps. For this painting I used a cotton canvas for the support, not my favorite. I used some of Gamblin's solvent free get to help move the paint when I first layed in the paint. It helped to spread over the rougher canvas weave.

The second painting was a small barn with a patch of wild mustard.

Day 40, project 125 Lone tree and rock wash painterly painting BECKY JOY

Today is another difficult day with my daughter. I painted this morning and also started my next book or most probably a dvd about color. I've been going through notes that I have gathered together over several months and organizing my thoughts. Right now, it is an outline and where I will start. A couple more days and I can start video taping some. I've had so many people ask me about dvd's and especially about color. It's time to start working on it. It will be more intensive than the last book that I put together, because it is a complicated and sometimes difficult subject to understand.

Today, while I was painting this painting I was think more about color itself and how I use it. The range of colors in this painting is in the blues and greens with a little bit of orange and red, which is a split complementary. The complementary colors red and orange are just used as an accent. The painting seems colorful, but it is a small range of colors, but it does harmonize very well.  I softened the background with my brush to knock it back, giving more aerial perspective.

I will be taking off real soon to go back to my daughter's house to make dinner for everyone and to have dinner myself for tonight. Back to the painting tomorrow.

Day 8, Project 125 Balancing Act CA Sierras BECKY JOY

Balancing act, that's what it feels like trying to keep up on my posts without having regular internet access. I found an old Inn and Bar in the town of Bridgeport, CA. Cool place and old (at least in the west) 1887. The town is really interesting and very small. I've walked around town, maybe 5 blocks ( a long walk, lol) Below is a photo of the courthouse. I'll have to take a photo of the Inn when I leave.

I've been camping nearby. This morning I intended to get up at dawn to paint the mountains, they were really a warm pink color. I was about 20 minutes too late. I wasn't able to finish the painting, so it's up at dawn to finish it tomorrow.

I loved all the tumbled rocks at the higher elevations. There were plenty I passed, but there weren't good areas to pull over when I did see something. Finally, a place to park and paint both."Balancing Act" is the results. One more night camping and then onto my friends house and a real bed. Nice!

Merced River Plein Air in Yosemite Day #4, Project 125 BECKY JOY

Each morning I've driven by the river and finally stopped this morning, a very quiet place. I never saw a soul. I liked those bits of bright green with the sunlight hitting the bushes. This painting was hard not to get "everything" in it. Yesterday's painting had a bug in it, today's, I notice a little dirt up on the right. Oh well, as soon as it dries, it will brush off. Always better to leave it for later than to try and clean it up while it is wet.

My daughter and grandkids left to go back home this morning. Two of them have their birthdays next week, so a special day for them. The little one wanted to make sure she was home for her birthday. The oldest will be 15 this year, wow unbelievable. I think he would have liked to have stayed longer. But, varsity football practice makes a short vacation.

I got a little more painting done today. I painted this wonderful old tree on an 11"x14" panel.

OMG, the internet connection is PAINFULLY slow here. It's so hard to keep at it and not open multiple windows. But, beautiful weather again. I found a camp spot here for two more nights, so that's it, I'll be moving on in 3 days. Not sure where yet! Tomorrow, I will probably stick closer to camp. I need to get a couple of studio paintings done this week, sooner than later. This will be interesting to see how much work I can get done while on the road. If it works out well, what a great office job. Love it!

Project 125 Day #1 Yosemite Valley

I drove straight through from Phoenix to Yosemite. I'm here camping with my daughter and grandkids and friends. They all left Wednesday afternoon about 5 pm which made it an early morning arrival. No thanks! (they're younger). I waited and got a night's sleep. I arrived last night, ate, slept and went out painting this morning. Now, it's break time with the family, after the computer. The weather is perfect California weather. I'm hoping to get out this evening for another painting with that golden light on half dome. Choices, choices, so much to paint here. This was painted from one of the meadows in the valley. The grass is a beautiful green now, or maybe it's just green coming from Arizona! I set up on a boardwalk close to the river. By the time I was finishing, the tourists were coming out. A couple from San Luis Obispo stopped and talked for a while and a couple from Germany. I really wanted to get a view of the rocks with that golden morning light, beautiful streaming down the rocks. Hopefully, I can get out at dusk and paint the warm evening light on the rocks. After finishing my painting, I packed up and headed to the lodge for some computer time. First day, I made it on the computer, that's good. I'm hoping that I don't run into some glitches with posting at some point. But with camping anything can happen. No bears yet! If you think a friend would be interested in this series, pass it on. Painted on location in Ceour d'Alene, ID. It was the variety of colors in the greens that drew me to the scene. I also had fun with the brushwork.
