I have visited many of the California missions, and one of the things I love is that many have beautiful fountains. Those that are working fountains often have floating water lilies in a variety of colors. I painted this from a photo I took of the fountain at San Juan Capistrano, one of the most beautiful missions.

Recently I visited several of the California missions, and I found some beautiful Matilija poppies growing in the garden at Mission La Purisima, in Lompoc, CA. I love to watch these large poppies floating in the breeze, and their graceful petals look like angel wings. This painting is a little different from my normal style, but it was fun to do. My local art group, the Gilbert Visual Art League, had a summer project to complete a macro (close-up) painting. While I was visiting some of the California missions this summer, I took close-up photos of some grapes on the vine at Mission San Antonio de Padua, north of San Luis Obispo. That became my macro subject, and voilà -- here's the finished piece!

Garapata California plein air oil landscape paintings by BECKY JOY

I tried to take some photos of work in progress, but like usual I missed a few steps. For this painting I used a cotton canvas for the support, not my favorite. I used some of Gamblin's solvent free get to help move the paint when I first layed in the paint. It helped to spread over the rougher canvas weave.
The second painting was a small barn with a patch of wild mustard.

I had planned to start yesterday, but was ill-prepared. I forgot to throw in a new tube of white paint.
Needless to say, it made it difficult to paint. I had a scraper yesterday and gave up. I waited until the Gamblin booth opened and picked up a big tube of white along with some other colors. In these paintings I used their new grays and whites: cool & warm white, warm portland gray, cool portland gray, and buff titanium. I really had a fun time mixing and painting with all those grays. It was a good day working with grays. It'll help me to prepare for Art in the Open in Ireland.
I'll start posting some more tomorrow. All of these paintings will be 5x7, $100. each.

Carmel Mission Wall, 8x6 oil painting by Stevie Denny
Last Spring I visited the Monterey area, and since I'm visiting all of the California missions I went to two missions that were close by: Mission San Juan Bautista and Mission Carmel. When I visited Carmel to do some plein air painting, I found that the mission was being renovated, so there were huge scaffolds on one of the basilica's domes. Another complication was that some signature members of the California Art Club were there that day to paint as well. I thought it might be pretty difficult to paint the scaffolding, and I sure didn't want to embarrass myself among this illustrious group of painters, so I settled on painting the exterior wall that had some nice foliage and shadows. It was a wonderful day, and so nice to meet so many very accomplished painters.

The Red Door, 6x6 oil painting by Stevie Denny
Mission San Luis Rey de Francia in Oceanside, California is the "King of the Missions". Named for King Louis IX of France, this was a former Spanish mission. It iis still a working mission today, cared for by the people of the parish. The Red Door is one of the many doors leading to the interior of the main building. This mission has two asistencias, or sub-missions, associated with it. Since the California missions were set up to be a day's travel between them, I often wondered how someone got from Oceanside to San Gabriel in one day (a distance of 89 miles). I did some research, and I found there were ranches that provided lodging for travelers in-between. The two asistencias (stations) for Mission San Luis Rey are Las Flores, near San Clemente and San Antonio de Pala, near Pala Mesa. Some of these asistencias are still standing, and I plan to go back and visit them, as I visit all 21 of the California missions.

Day 13, Project 125 Painting Oregon farms by BECKY JOY

I finally made it to my destination in Oregon late last night. It was a light, typical rain almost all through my drive in Oregon. I slept in this morning, but did get out for a short time later in the day. In this scene I was attracted to the clouds that enveloped the top of the mountain and of course, the green field.
Everything is pretty green right now, and a nice, pleasant temperature. It will be heating up by the end of the week, sounds like record temps to me. I visited with family today and will be seeing friends and more family while I'm here. I'm a fourth generation born in Oregon City (my son was a fifth). You can imagine that I have a lot of relatives here. It's funny every time I come up here, I'm struck by how green it is, certainly compared to the desert. Summers are perfect in the Northwest.
Tomorrow I'm hoping to start getting out and doing a little more plein air, hopefully early in the morning. You'll see what I see tomorrow.

Day 12, Project 125 Susanville, CA Barn plein air painting

I didn't get out of Lake Tahoe until almost 11:00. (I had to stop by the post office to get something in the mail that was overdue, oops!) Anyway, got my work done and posted my painting from the night before.
I remember Susanville from years ago going through there on the way to Reno from Oregon. I don't know why it has always stuck in my mind, but I do love those old barns and farms. In this barn I got a great shot of an old truck, which is below. I'll have to paint that later.
It was afternoon by the time I got in Susanville. I was struck by the beautiful blues of the mountains. That blue always seems indescribable in paint. It's kind of an ultramarine & colbalt combination. In this painting I placed the light of the sky against the dark of the barn, adding a little yellow and cad red to the white, just a tiny, tiny bit. I very seldom use a pure white in a painting and only sparingly.

Day 11, Project 125 Summer Solstice Moonlight Painting on Lake Tahoe

Well, I'm a little behind on my blogging, but not behind on the painting. One more painting to get in today. I will be taking off in a few minutes leaving rainy Tahoe for probably rainy Oregon. I haven't looked at the weather for Oregon. Yep, just looked.... cloudy and rainy. It's before the 4th of July, so it was a safe bet I was right. So, I guess my next painting will be a rainy one.I had a busy weekend here on Lake Tahoe with my friend Michele de Braganca. Friday night we went down to the lake beach for a bar-b-que/solstice party to watch the moon rise over the lake. It was beautiful and BIG, which I think I told you a little about in the last post. Anyway, this painting was painted the next morning from memory. The sunlight was hitting the tops of some of the mountains while the moon was comiing up. It was gorgeous.
Sat, I felt a little lazy, but did take care of business things, went on a walk and painted the above painting. In the late afternoon we all went down to the beach again for the start of the summer concerts with the "Trey Stone Band". Lots of fun dancing and listening to 60's music. It felt like HS days out there. Then dinner when we came home.
Michele and I are already planning my trip next year stopping here longer, going out camping and painting to several locations around the area. Now, it's off to my next destination. Talk to you all later today or possibly two posts tomorrow to catch up on the blogging.

Twin Lakes, the Lake Tahoe Day 10, Project 125 BECKY JOY

I started at Twin Lakes and ended at Lake Tahoe, what a difference. Actually, I was in Tahoe all day getting here last night at my friend, Michele de Braganca's house. We went out painting today at Obexer's Boat Yard. I've heard there are several artists that have painted there, a lot of material. I intended on painting a small one after the larger painting that I painted, but I was wiped out and layed down in the camper after the painting below. I had this one painting from the day before that I thought I would add today for #10.

I was drawn to the shapes in this scene first thing and then all the color in and around the boats. I kept my hard edges for the boats and around them.
I'm hurrying to get this post done so that we can all go to a soltice party on the lake. It should be great with the BIG moon tonight. Have a great weekend everyone. Talk to you tomorrow.

Day #9, Project 125, Twin Lakes, CA Cabin, plein air oil by BECKY JOY

Day #9, a long time camping and up at dawn, not the norm for me, but I do get up at dawn for painting. This was painted at about 8 am after starting another at dawn that I wasn't able to finish. I liked the shadow shapes, but also the contrast of the red-orange of the cabin with the greens in the scene. The topography was also interesting to paint the flat field and the hillside with the cabin. It was a nice calm morning with the wind picking up in the afternoon.

Day 8, Project 125 Balancing Act CA Sierras BECKY JOY

Balancing act, that's what it feels like trying to keep up on my posts without having regular internet access. I found an old Inn and Bar in the town of Bridgeport, CA. Cool place and old (at least in the west) 1887. The town is really interesting and very small. I've walked around town, maybe 5 blocks ( a long walk, lol) Below is a photo of the courthouse. I'll have to take a photo of the Inn when I leave.
I've been camping nearby. This morning I intended to get up at dawn to paint the mountains, they were really a warm pink color. I was about 20 minutes too late. I wasn't able to finish the painting, so it's up at dawn to finish it tomorrow.
I loved all the tumbled rocks at the higher elevations. There were plenty I passed, but there weren't good areas to pull over when I did see something. Finally, a place to park and paint both."Balancing Act" is the results. One more night camping and then onto my friends house and a real bed. Nice!

Each morning I've driven by the river and finally stopped this morning, a very quiet place. I never saw a soul. I liked those bits of bright green with the sunlight hitting the bushes. This painting was hard not to get "everything" in it. Yesterday's painting had a bug in it, today's, I notice a little dirt up on the right. Oh well, as soon as it dries, it will brush off. Always better to leave it for later than to try and clean it up while it is wet.
My daughter and grandkids left to go back home this morning. Two of them have their birthdays next week, so a special day for them. The little one wanted to make sure she was home for her birthday. The oldest will be 15 this year, wow unbelievable. I think he would have liked to have stayed longer. But, varsity football practice makes a short vacation.
I got a little more painting done today. I painted this wonderful old tree on an 11"x14" panel.
OMG, the internet connection is PAINFULLY slow here. It's so hard to keep at it and not open multiple windows. But, beautiful weather again. I found a camp spot here for two more nights, so that's it, I'll be moving on in 3 days. Not sure where yet! Tomorrow, I will probably stick closer to camp. I need to get a couple of studio paintings done this week, sooner than later. This will be interesting to see how much work I can get done while on the road. If it works out well, what a great office job. Love it!

Project 125 Day #1 Yosemite Valley

I drove straight through from Phoenix to Yosemite. I'm here camping with my daughter and grandkids and friends. They all left Wednesday afternoon about 5 pm which made it an early morning arrival. No thanks! (they're younger). I waited and got a night's sleep. I arrived last night, ate, slept and went out painting this morning. Now, it's break time with the family, after the computer.
The weather is perfect California weather. I'm hoping to get out this evening for another painting with that golden light on half dome. Choices, choices, so much to paint here. This was painted from one of the meadows in the valley. The grass is a beautiful green now, or maybe it's just green coming from Arizona! I set up on a boardwalk close to the river. By the time I was finishing, the tourists were coming out. A couple from San Luis Obispo stopped and talked for a while and a couple from Germany.
I really wanted to get a view of the rocks with that golden morning light, beautiful streaming down the rocks. Hopefully, I can get out at dusk and paint the warm evening light on the rocks. After finishing my painting, I packed up and headed to the lodge for some computer time. First day, I made it on the computer, that's good. I'm hoping that I don't run into some glitches with posting at some point. But with camping anything can happen. No bears yet!

I've been cleaning out my studio and I am overrun with plein air paintings. I decided to add some paintings to a studio sale. A painting each day for a while. This one was painted in Central California. As you know, I'm always a sucker for farms.
I've been working on my presentation for the Plein Air Convention this next week. Hope that some of you will be coming to the event. I will be speaking at the Basics Course and painting on location.
