Land of Enchantment, Southwest Landscape Paintings by Arizona Artist Amy Whitehouse

12" x 16", Oil on Stretched Canvas, $295

Painted with juicy R&F pigment sticks,
this landscape painting says New Mexico to me.
I don't understand how the sky can "be bigger" here
in the Southwest,
but for this kid from Florida, it truly is.
The clouds are enormous, the land goes on and on,
the distant mountains are luscious.

Day 46 Road View Painting and new online workshop BECKY JOY

© 2013 Becky Joy    Day 46, Road Vista      oil      6 inches x 6 inches    $125.
                 Free Shipping in Continental US

I'm getting into the swing here of painting in Colorado, but then there is that afternoon rain to contend with. I got up early to go to Rocky Mtn National Park to paint some mountains. I finished an 8x10, started another, then the rain came.  So, after driving around a bit, I went down to Lyon and Longmont and painted trees. I finished this painting, started another and had to pack it up when the rain came again. I think Janet Anderson and I will stick close to home tomorrow so we don't have to get up so early and to also avoid some of the afternoon rains in the mountains.

I got some great photos of clouds today. The 8x10 painting is mostly clouds with a little mountains. I video taped the painting process for my next online workshop which will be released in about a week. The unfinished tree that I started has enough color notes so that I can continue it from a photo. The big ol' cottonwoods are just wonderful to paint, love em.

The response to my online workshop video that I released last work has been great. I've gotten several emails of thanks. But, I want to thank all of the artists that purchased from me. It started a little rocky with me uploading a video in the wrong format, not everyone was able to download it. But, I did get a new copy to everyone and remade the video in a different format. So, all is well now and thank you everyone for your patience. I also made a change at the suggestion of a viewer. She said she would like a copy of the reference photo to download. I now have the reference photo that I used in the video and the supply list as pdf's for all to download. That should make the experience even easier.

I plan on having 2 videos uploaded each month. For several months I have been organizing an online workshop with several videos of concepts to package together as a more complete workshop. Once I have finished videoing all of the segments, I will offer the package workshop for sale. But, I need to be home more to make the videos.

I'll talk to you all tomorrow,

Day 44, Project 125 Ranch House, plein air paintings BECKY JOY

© 2013 Becky Joy      Day 44, Ranch House    oil    6 inches x 6 inches    $125.

This composition is reminiscent of yesterday's. I've been using the small paintings painted in the studio as a way to experiment, but also trying to find ones that I want to paint larger. What struck me about this scene was the grasses and the fence posts. I may do something similar to this painting, creating more foreground with the fence posts. I'll have to play with this one some more.

After painting this one, I worked on a couple of plein air paintings that have been hanging around the studio. The first one was painting in Zion last fall during the plein air festival. I liked the overall scene, but felt that it just didn't have the wow factor to it. I painted some shadow in the foreground which helped to bring out the background light. I also softened the mountains and clouds on the left side to help bring out the bright yellows on the right side. I think the painting is much more successful now.

Next up was a painting that had just literally five strokes on paint added to it. I painted this a couple of years ago in Escalante, Utah. I was attracted to the afternoon light and all the junk in and around this little shed. The pile of light colored "stuff" on the right is where I added a little more light. I wanted the attention there and it needed to be lighter to bring the viewer there.

Tomorrow I need to get down to some serious painting. I spent too much time working on my facebook page this morning. Unfortunately, I find the computer and photoshop too much fun.

Day 43, Project 125 Yamhill, Oregon Red Barn oil landscape painting BECKY JOY

© 2013 Becky Joy   Nightfall       oil    6 inches x 6 inches      $125.

Today I played with color after finishing my large barn painting, Yamhill Barn, 30"x40" oil. I felt like a nocturne. I had had this one in my mind for a couple of weeks. It was one that I was going to paint larger, but I thought I would try it first in a small size. I'm not sure if I will go larger with it or move on. I need to get some sunsets going in larger sizes. That may be next on the agenda.

In this painting I used a small range of colors keeping them grayed with subtle differences between them. It is always tricky to get enough light in the painting, but dark enough to tell the viewer it is nighttime. Without enough light it is just a dark painting. I like to have some definite light hitting an object to create more interest in a nocturne. In this one the moon is outside the field of vision.

Day #9, Project 125, Twin Lakes, CA Cabin, plein air oil by BECKY JOY

Twin Lakes Cabin Day 9© 2013 Becky Joy    Twin Lakes Cabin   oil  6 inches x 6 inches   $125.

Day #9, a long time camping and up at dawn, not the norm for me, but I do get up at dawn for painting. This was painted at about 8 am after starting another at dawn that I wasn't able to finish. I liked the shadow shapes, but also the contrast of the red-orange of the cabin with the greens in the scene. The topography was also interesting to paint the flat field and the hillside with the cabin. It was a nice calm morning with the wind picking up in the afternoon.
© 2013 Becky Joy     Bridgeport, CA, Green and White    oil  9 inches x 9 inches   $900.

By the time I painted this painting, it was windy, which is probably the norm in this region. I saw this scene the first day I arrived in Bridgeport, CA. Today I stopped across the street to see if I could park in a motel parking lot to paint. I was told "NO". So I went across the street and found a better view anyway. It was fun painting all the shades of green and white. I had to play down some of the whites to get a brighter white up on the peak of the background house. I also used a thicker brushstroke there and brightened the red roof next to the white bringing the viewer to that area. Below are photos of the above scenes.

Now, it's on the road to my next destination, Lake Tahoe, to my friends house. Nothing like stopping at a friends for a hot shower. Nice!

Day #7, Project 125 Yosemite Trees, Again BECKY JOY

© 2013 Becky Joy    Yosemite Tree    oil 6 inches x 6 inches    $125.

Packed up early this morning. I hate that packing away a tent. It never fits back the way it came, but I got it in that bag. Nice. Car's all packed, gassed up and ready to go. Paints are always in the back ready to pull out.  On to the next stop.
I got stuck on the trees a lot. Actually the smoke wasn't real good for some of the views. I had a few ideas, but I know that the view wasn't the same as what I first saw. Oh well, next trip here. And, I will definitely be back.
Talk to you all tomorrow.

Merced River Plein Air in Yosemite Day #4, Project 125 BECKY JOY

© 2013 Becky Joy   Along the Merced River, Yosemite   oil 6 inches x 6 inches
Each morning I've driven by the river and finally stopped this morning, a very quiet place. I never saw a soul. I liked those bits of bright green with the sunlight hitting the bushes. This painting was hard not to get "everything" in it. Yesterday's painting had a bug in it, today's, I notice a little dirt up on the right. Oh well, as soon as it dries, it will brush off. Always better to leave it for later than to try and clean it up while it is wet.
My daughter and grandkids left to go back home this morning. Two of them have their birthdays next week, so a special day for them. The little one wanted to make sure she was home for her birthday. The oldest will be 15 this year, wow unbelievable. I think he would have liked to have stayed longer. But, varsity football practice makes a short vacation.
I got a little more painting done today. I painted this wonderful old tree on an 11"x14" panel.
OMG, the internet connection is PAINFULLY slow here. It's so hard to keep at it and not open multiple windows. But, beautiful weather again. I found a camp spot here for two more nights, so that's it, I'll be moving on in 3 days. Not sure where yet! Tomorrow, I will probably stick closer to camp. I need to get a couple of studio paintings done this week, sooner than later. This will be interesting to see how much work I can get done while on the road. If it works out well, what a great office job. Love it!
Talk to you all tomorrow.

Project 125, Day #5 Yosemite Becky Joy

© 2013 Becky Joy   Among the Trees   oil 6 inches x 6 inches

The RSS Feed has been fixed. Now, the blog! The read more links don't work. I have gone through trying to figure out what is wrong to no avail. I have a message into my computer guy to look into it. So sorry about this mishap. Today I drove into town and am working on the internet. Too many things piling up that need to be addressed. Also, a lack of electric when camping is difficult when working on the computer. Hmmm.... imagine that, you need electric. I think I will be buying a battery charger to take with me. That could make life easier. I will be staying her in Yosemite for a bit more painting. There are way too many things to paint and I may not make it to Oregon if I don't give it up and move on. Computer issues have been my greatest frustration, camping is the easy part! Talk to you all tomorrow. Oh, and the batteries on my camera are out. Now to recharge them on the drive back to the park.

California Farm plein air oil landscape painting by BECKY JOY

© 2013 Becky Joy    California Farm   oil      9 x 12"
I've been cleaning out my studio and I am overrun with plein air paintings. I decided to add some paintings to a studio sale. A painting each day for a while. This one was painted in Central California. As you know, I'm always a sucker for farms.
I've been working on my presentation for the Plein Air Convention this next week. Hope that some of you will be coming to the event. I will be speaking at the Basics Course and painting on location.
Check out my post today on Easel Notes about how to paint successfully in the sun without an umbrella.

"Morning In Yarnell" by Li Hua Mahalik

Oil on Canvas, 14x18

Yarnell is a beautiful town about two hours of drive north of Phoenix. On highway 89 to and fro you can see cottonwood trees gather here and there along the creeks and mountains rising and falling in the distance and near. I love it's openness, crispy air and quietude. It's truly picturesque in every way.

This is painted from one of the pictures I took a year ago. For some reason I liked the composition even though it's somewhat unconventional. The perspective is good here.

This little painting study was done in the Arizona high country. In springtime this meadow really comes to life and I am not just talking about the unwanted bears and the elk visitors.
