"Famous Artist" Impressionist Watercolor Portrait by Arizona Artist, Sharon Sieben

Watercolor, medium that I tend to resist. I'm really intimidated by process but am going to give it my best efforts. I am not a realistic painter, however, think for a learning process, and getting a feel for the technique, it's probably a good idea to go there for now (as much as possible) until I get a better skill set

If you can recognize the subject, then I am making some progress

New Watercolor Paintings

I'm experimenting in a relatively new media for me.  I do use some charcoal during the process, so when the work is dry, I spray the painting with both a Fixative and UV protective spray.  The work is then mounted onto 1.5" deep wood cradles with the sides painted black.  When thoroughly dry, an archival coat of acrylic varnish follows.  Unlike traditional watercolor works, this presentation does not require framing under glass.  The wood cradle is wired on the back and ready to hang.

This painting is on 140# WC Paper- 12" x 9"Moment in the Sun

Matilija Poppy, 9x7 watercolor painting by Stevie Denny

Matilija Poppy
9x7 watercolor painting
on 140 lb. Fabriano watercolor paper
Unmatted and unframed

I painted this from a photo I took of a Matilija Poppy at Mission La Purisima in Lompoc, California last year.  These poppies have large petals on tall stems, and they float in the breeze like angels.  They are so elegant, and challenging but fun to paint.

What Did You Say? 7x5 watercolor painting by Stevie Denny

What Did You Say?
7x5 watercolor painting
on 140 lb. Strathmore paper
unframed, but matted to 10x8 size

This little bird was in a tree when I was visiting one of the California missions, and each time I tried to get closer with my camera, he would move farther away from me.  So my reference photo was a little fuzzy, but he made a good subject for a quick little study.

This is a little watercolor study I did today.   It's on the back of another not-so-good painting, so I'm offering it at a low price.  The painting will ship unframed, but with a 7x5 white matte (outer edge of matte is 10x8).

This painting is available on Daily Paintworks.  Just click on the link to go to my page.

Although I paint mostly in oil, I like to paint in watercolor, too.  This is a little study I did today, thanks to the reference photo provided by photographer Robin Reeds on Corbis.com.

This painting is available for purchase on Daily Paintworks, and it will ship with an acid-free matte in a clear bag envelope.

Daisy Trio, 10x8 watercolor painting by Stevie Denny

Daisy Trio
10x8 watercolor painting
on Fabriano 140# watercolor paper

I did this watercolor study today -- it's on the back of a really awful painting I did in a workshop (I won't mention which workshop).  Anyway, I liked this little painting so I decided to post it.  At least the sheet of paper wasn't a total loss.

This painting is available for purchase for a small amount on Daily Paintworks.

Spring Chick, 8x10 watercolor painting by Stevie Denny

Spring Chick
8x10 watercolor painting
on 140# Fabriano cold press paper

I didn't have much time to paint today, so I did this little study from a photo I saw on paintmyphoto.ning.com.  This is a site where photographers post photos for artists to use as painting reference.  Although I was looking for a rooster, I couldn't pass up this cute little chick when I saw it.  Many thanks to the photographer, Diane Caswell Christian, for the use of her Spring Chick photo.

This painting is available for purchase through an online auction on Daily Paintworks.

This is Day 6 of the 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge, and I have the flu.  This was a painting I had started a few weeks ago, and fortunately I finished it before I ran out of energy.

Hydrangeas in Pink
7x5 watercolor painting
on Fabriano 140 lb. cold press paper

Hydrangeas don't grow here in Mesa, Arizona; but I love their beautiful colors.  I painted these from a reference photo I took in Portland, Oregon -- a much better place for them to grow.

This painting is available for purchase through an online auction on Daily Paintworks at http://www.dailypaintworks.com/buy/auction/298038.

Peaches, 14x11 watercolor painting by Stevie Denny

Peaches
14x11 watercolor painting
on 140# Fabriano Artistico paper

I painted this from a photo of my dog, Peaches, during the time I took classes from Kim Johnson-Nechtman last year. Peaches was one of a kind --a gentle, loving dog who loved everyone. She lived for 17 years, and although Peaches has been gone for over ten years, I miss her every day.

Tree Study, 4x6 watercolor / India Ink painting by Stevie Denny

Tree Study
4x6 watercolor / India Ink painting
on 140 lb. Fabriano cold press paper

Last Saturday I attended a class with watercolor artist John Erwin, who uses India Ink in his watercolor paintings.  The workshop was lots of fun, and I really like his technique.  Since my painting time was very limited today, I worked on a small tree study.

This painting is available through an online auction at Daily Paintworks.

Sweet Dreams, 14x11 watercolor painting by Stevie Denny

Sweet Dreams
14 x 11 watercolor painting
on 140 lb. Arches cold press paper

I love to paint from old black and white photos, especially those of my family. I painted this from my favorite photo of my mother Trudy, who will be 93 in March. Trudy Whittet was one of ten children who grew up on a dairy farm in Redwood Falls, Minnesota. The only heat for the entire house was a wood stove in the kitchen, so in the wintertime the kids used to grab their clothes, run to the barn and get dressed in between the cows to stay warm. What a difficult life. Trudy was an honor student in high school, and she had a scholarship to go to medical school; but her parents would have been required to pay $600, and they just didn't have the money. So Trudy went to Nurse's Training in St. Paul because it was less expensive, and she could work her way through school. Between her schooling and working at the hospital, I can imagine she was bone tired most of the time. One of her classmates took this photo while she was catching a nap. I wish nurses still wore the crisp white uniforms, starched cap and white stockings. I can remember my mom wearing this uniform to work when I was a child. She always looked so professional.

This painting is not for sale, but I hope you enjoyed viewing it.

Sky Dreamer, 14x11 watercolor painting by Stevie Denny

Sky Dreamer
14x11 Watercolor on 140 lb. Fabriano hot press paper

I painted this portrait of my husband as a gift for him.  Bob has volunteered with the  Maricopa County Sheriff's Posse for the past 13 years.  While he has served in several different positions, last year he was thrilled to have been given the opportunity to serve in the Aviation Division as a Technical Flight Officer (second in command).  A lifelong aviator from a family of aviators, Bob earned his helicopter certification last year, realizing the dream of a lifetime.  One of his co-workers had taken this photo of him in the helicopter, and when I saw the subject matter, I knew I had to paint it.  It is the most difficult and complicated painting I've ever done.
