Easter Lilies

My son had sent me lilies at Easter, and I painted this from a photo of the flowers.  I really enjoyed painting these shapes -- different from the flowers I normally paint.

Study for Commission Acrylic on Canvas Paper

This is a sketch/study for a commission I am painting for a dear friend.  Always good to do a study before the painting.  It gives you some idea of values and colors to use before the real painting.  The commission will be done in oil on gallery canvas.

This painting is from a photo of a still life setup that I took at Scottsdale Artists' School, while taking a class from Joni Falk a few years ago. I'm donating this painting to the Mesa Arts Center's annual 10x10 Exhibit that's held each year on October 10.  All paintings sell for $100.

I have always wanted to paint a colorful bear.  Interestingly enough, if the colors are the right shades of warm and cool,  you can create form.  This is my version of "Punky Bear."

Day 17, Project 125 Oregon, Home Grown by BECKY JOY

Today, I spent a lot of time at home, cleaning my car (that was a job), on the computer, and doing nothing. I went out painting late in the day. I had seen this little overgrown place along the highway. I always like those unkept places with more character. I was drawn to the variety of color in the foliage and the house peeking out from the bushes. It had an old rusted tin roof which certainly adds to the character. In the foreground their were some  ferns and all kinds of weeds growing. Some of the colors in the foreground were picked up in piles with the brush and layed on like a palette knife.

Tomorrow I think I will get out early. It is hot for this area in the afternoons.

I would like to find out from some of you what you would want me to teach you if you were taking a workshop from me.

Day 15, Project 125 Oregon Trees, A Green State by Becky joy

If you have never been to Oregon to see the variety of greens, I'm sure you've heard about them. Oregon is a very green state, in more ways than just the color. This is from the back deck of my parents place. I ran around doing errands today and visiting some friends, so there wasn't a lot of painting time. (I'll have to make more tomorrow.) I came home and started painting at about 5 pm.

 This painting was really about the greens and showing the subtle differences and varieties. The foreground tree was really the only one in light. The trees are in a ravine with the weeds going down the hillside. The grasses are starting to dry out and turn a warm color. Besides just using color to indicate distance, I used brushstrokes, larger brushstrokes in the foreground and the large diagonal stroke on the left grass to indicate the direction of the land.

Painted in Colorado near Vail. I was attracted to the clear water and seeing bottom of the lake and reflections. It's nice how the reddish muddy bottom contrasts with the greens of the surrounding banks.

Big Bang Theory

Big Bang Theory is an original acrylic painting on watercolor paper. The paper has been coated on both sides with gesso before the acrylic paint is applied.  The work is 11 x 14 inches. The work is matted with a off-white mat to 16x20 inches and framed in a narrow black corporate frame. Big Bang Theory is by AZ abstract artist Jake Beckman.  The predominant colors are shades of gold, green and dark brown punctuated by red.   The work is consisted of a green gold spiral overlaid with thick ropes of dark brown paint.  The eye is drawn to a glittering red beaded spot in the middle of the work. 

The Abstract Concepts series encompasses Jake's free form exploration and expression of color, emotion, ideas, textures and structured formlessness, in search of the intrinsic quality of things rather than absolute concrete representation.

Scorpions and Frogs is an original acrylic painting on watercolor paper. The paper has been coated on both sides with gesso before the acrylic paint is applied.  The work is 11 x 14 inches. The work is matted with a off-white mat to 16x20 inches and framed in a narrow black corporate frame.Scorpions and Frogs is by AZ representational abstract artist Jake Beckman.  The predominant colors are shades of gold, green and dark brown.   The work is consisted of a Penrose sun made of scorpion tiles in dark brown and frog tiles in green. Two tiles are vacant and a realistic scorpion is sitting on a group of frog tiles.  One is left to wonder where the frog got off to.

Cardinal Rules by Jake Beckman

Cardinal Rules a Binary Birds painting; the title of the work is reflected in ASCII Binary Code in the background. This artwork is created digitally, meaning a print is its final fixed form.  As such all prints made of this image are original artwork, in the same manner as a photograph, or print made from an engraving, is considered original artwork. It can be reproduced in 8x10 inch, 16x20 inch or in a canvas print 24x32 inch.  Of course other sizes and substrates are possible.  Each image is signed by the artist after creation, and the edition noted in the margin of the print. The artwork depicts a roller derby cardinal hip checking a raven skater, while a bald eagle referee cries fowl.
