Pink Tulips

Today I finally finished a painting I started a few months ago in a session at my friend Krista Eaton's studio.  I no longer had a reference photo, so I just winged it.

Pink and White, 10x10 oil painting by Stevie Denny

Pink and White
10x10 oil painting
on Raymar cotton panel
Unframed

This is a re-work of another painting of peonies I had done, but I always felt something was missing.  I think the daisies now have taken center stage, but I'm happier with the painting now.

Easter Lilies, 12x12 oil painting by Stevie Denny

Easter Lilies

My son had sent me lilies at Easter, and I painted this from a photo of the flowers.  I really enjoyed painting these shapes -- different from the flowers I normally paint.

This is painted on a deep-edge canvas, so no need to frame.  It will be wired on the back before shipping.  It is available on Daily Paintworks -- just click on the link to go to my page.

I finally finished this painting of peonies that I started a few weeks ago in Krista Eaton's class at Scottsdale Artist's School.   I had posted a similar, smaller painting last week that has already gone to a good home, but this one is still available on Daily Paintworks.  Just click on the link to go to my page.

Tea Rose, 8x8 oil painting by Stevie Denny

Tea Rose
8x8 oil painting
on deep-edge canvas,
ready to hang

This past year I planted my first rose bush in my yard.  I chose it for the color -- I don't know much about roses, but I want to learn more.  The rose plant iscalled a Tea Rose, and it produces roses in beautiful colors of peach, pink and white.  I painted this from a set-up in my studio, and the daisies were flowers I bought at the market.  Now I want to plant more rose bushes, but I have a feeling I should wait until cooler weather, since I live in the Phoenix area.

Color Riot, 12x4 oil painting by Stevie Denny

Color Riot
12x4 oil painting
on deep-edge canvas

This isn't what I was going to paint today, but when I went to the market and saw all these bright colors, I grabbed the bouquet and decided to paint it instead.  These daisies are so brightly colored -- how do they do that?  It must be dye, because soon after I put the daisies in a vase,  the water turned pink!  This is painted on a deep-edge canvas, so no need to frame.

I painted this from a photo of my periwinkles in my back yard.  I grow them all year -- they are the only flowering plant I can get to survive the extreme summer heat in Phoenix.  They are always so colorful.

Hydrangeas in Pink
7x5 watercolor painting

Hydrangeas don't grow here in Mesa, Arizona; but I love their beautiful colors.  I painted these from a reference photo I took in Portland, Oregon -- a much better place for them to grow.

Water Lilies, 6x6 oil painting by Stevie Denny

Water Lilies
6x6 oil painting
on Raymar cotton panel

I have visited many of the California missions, and one of the things I love is that many have beautiful fountains.  Those that are working fountains often have floating water lilies in a variety of colors.  I painted this from a photo I took of the fountain at San Juan Capistrano, one of the most beautiful missions.

Winter Rose, 6x6 oil painting by Stevie Denny

Winter Rose
6x6 oil painting
on Raymar cotton panel

This flower gave me fits!  I painted it from life -- a rose from the miniature bush I bought at the market last year.  I struggled to keep the plant alive during our hot summer months, and once the weather cooled down, it bloomed like crazy.  It produces the most delicate white and pink roses, but what a challenge to paint it! The little glass jar is also from the market -- so cute, it had fruit in it.  The lemon was recycled from yesterday's painting, from the tree in my back yard.  Tonight it's going to be 29 degrees here in Mesa, so I think this may be the last of my lemons that you see.  I hope the tree survives.

Summer Roses, 8x8 oil painting by Stevie Denny

Summer Roses
8x8 oil painting
on archival Raymar panel

I recently painted these roses at a session with my friend Krista Eaton, picked fresh from her garden.

While I was putting on the final touches back at my own studio, I had just finished and was moving this painting from my easel to a shelf. Somehow it slipped from my hands and landed face-down on the floor.  Since we have two dogs, of course it picked up some of their fur.  It seems like the fur never goes away, no matter how often we vacuum.  I carefully removed as much of the loose hair as I could with a soft brush, but it's safe to say that Missy and Chewy have contributed something to this painting, too!

Carmel Mission Wall, 8x6 oil painting by Stevie Denny

Last Spring I visited the Monterey area, and since I'm visiting all of the California missions I went to two missions that were close by:  Mission San Juan Bautista and Mission Carmel.  When I visited Carmel to do some plein air painting, I found that the mission was being renovated, so there were huge scaffolds on one of the basilica's domes.  Another complication was that some signature members of the California Art Club were there that day to paint as well.  I thought it might be pretty difficult to paint the scaffolding, and I sure didn't want to embarrass myself among this illustrious group of painters, so I settled on painting the exterior wall that had some nice foliage and shadows.  It was a wonderful day, and so nice to meet so many very accomplished painters.

Making Vintage Aprons, 6x6 oil painting by Stevie Denny

A few years ago, I got really interested in vintage aprons -- the kind our moms and grandmothers used to wear around the house.  I remember in the 1950s there were quite a few very cute styles.  Since I like to sew almost as much as I like to paint, I decided to make a few.  This painting is from a photo my husband took in the process of making matching aprons for his daughter and granddaughter.

Aprons have quite a history, and there are lots of websites devoted to vintage styles.  Who knew they would become so popular again?

Cactus Flower,6x6 oil painting by Stevie Denny

Cactus flowers brighten the landscape in the desert southwest.  They range from bright pink to peach, yellow and reds; and it's a delight to see them.  This cactus flower was on a smaller variety of cactus in my neighbor's yard.  I often take photos of these brightly colored flowers when I ride my bike on Spring mornings.
